The development of creativity is of major interest to art education as well as education in general. It is assumed by art educators, that creativity can and should be derived through art. However, in art the development of creativity is at a very elementary stage of understanding that incorporates unproven feelings and assumptions into philosophies and aims.

It is a truism in industrial design that the simplest machine which performs the function is the best. This is functionalism in the strictest sense and, within limitations, it can be applied to crafts design. Design contains a logic, however personal, and a sense of order. These aspects are achieved in execution partly through repetition and variation (or extensions of repetition and variation such as contrast, symmetry, balance, etc.) and partly through the materials used; together they work for unity. The contributions of the Greeks to the development and evolution science are enormous. Not only were the Greeks the originators of the basic philosophical and scientific: modes of reflection in the western world, but they were also the continuators as well as the best commentators and critics of their ancestors and their contemporaries. To restrict the contributions of the Greeks to science to the pre-Roman period would be wrong. It would be equally as -wrong to restrict the presense of original thinkers to that period also.
