Review Of Fauvel. The First Archaeologist In Athens And His Philhellenic Correspondents, By C. W. Clairmont, Effie Athanassopoulos

Clairmont’s book is a selection of letters addressed to Louis-François-Sébastien Fauvel, the French Consul and antiquarian, who lived in Athens from 1803 to 1822. Fauvel came to Greece for the first time in 1780. He was sent to the Orient by Count Choiseul-Gouffier in order to study, draw and acquire antiquities for Choiseul’s collection. In 1784 Choiseul-Gouffier was appointed Ambassador in Constantinople and Fauvel continued his activities as a member of Choiseul’s retinue until 1792. Subsequently, Fauvel held the position of French Consul in Athens from 1802 until 1833. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Fauvel left Athens …

Collective memory studies as a field has always been the interdisciplinary study of how and why memories have been created. The difference between collective or cultural memory studies and that of a strictly historical study is often discussed and debated as people question whether memory or history is more valuable regarding past events. Negotiating The Boundary Between Monastic Seclusion And Apostolic Mission In The Bishopric Of Chur Around The Year 800, Jenny Ataoguz

By virtue of their lifestyle and learning, early medieval monks were particularly well-suited to serve a pastoral role, yet at the turn of the ninth century, Carolingian efforts at reform reveal a discomfort with monastic engagement with the secular world through the establishment of clerical precedence in matters concerning the laity. But just as reform characterized Carolingian monasticism, so too did diversity, and in a region immediately adjacent to the Bishopric of Chur we have direct evidence of monks playing a pastoral role.

Being Seen: An Art Historical And Statistical Analysis Of Feminized Worship In Early Modern Rome, Olivia J. Belote
History Honors Projects
Female saints in early Christianity found their place in public veneration often through violent means, martyrdom. These saints, while publicly suffering in the imitation of Christ, were the original agents to navigate the gendered hierarchy within the religion. Female saints created an avenue for later female worshippers to understand Christianity on a strictly feminine level. Through the frescoed depictions of these female saints in 18 churches throughout Rome, this paper historically and statistically analyzes how the artistic representations of female saints added to or created a space for feminized worship.

Altering The Tradition: The Traditio Legis At The Monastery Of Saint John, Jenny Ataoguz

The main church of the Monastery of Saint John in Müstair, Switzerland preserves on its walls an extensive program of wall painting dating to around the year 800. The half-dome of one of its three apses presents a Traditio legis, a theme that had originated in Rome in the fourth century. Although the composition was firm during the first centuries of Christian art, with Paul on Christ’s right side and Peter on his left, early medieval versions more often reverse their placement. The focus of this paper is on the basilica of San Marco in Venice and its relationship to the political and social culture in which it was erected. Looking directly at the set of four horses placed high above the five main entrances and the mosaics of the transfer of Saint Mark’s relics to Venice which originally decorated these portals in the thirteenth century, this paper looks to discover connections between these rather unique designs and stylistic choices and the unique sense of identity the Venetians had long perpetuated. The prints of Sebald Beham, and his brother Barthel, were the subject of a recent exhibition titled Gottlosen Maler or Godless Painters at the Albrecht-Dürer-Haus in Nuremberg, Germany (March 3-July 3, 2011), where this essay was included in the exhibition’s catalogue in German. The essay addresses the biography and historiography of the “godless painter” Sebald Beham, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, who received the nickname "godless painter" because of his radical pronouncements in Reformation Nuremberg when the town was on the eve of becoming Lutheran. The essay argues that Beham should be viewed as a highly creative and productive entrepreneur …

Indeed, everyone who attempted to read the still controversial Corpus Areopagiticum either in the original Greek or in any translation, even if supplemented by abundant annotations, would have to acknowledge numerous interpretative questions these texts raise. Namely, the Corpus blends seemingly irreconcilable pagan and Christian thoughts. On the one hand, the Corpus stems from philosophical Neoplatonic writings attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite—an Athenian convert under Paul, the “first intellectual” Apostle who himself was concerned mostly with debatable questions about what it means to be Christian (Acts 17:16 34). other hand, the corpus includes numerous sixth-century and later theological Christian collations …

During the sixteenth century a symbiotic relationship developed between the form, use, and symbolic associations of the Venetian portego, the central reception and entertainment hall of Venetian palaces, and the paintings that were increasingly commissioned to ornament these spaces. The intended placement of the paintings affected their size, format, composition, subject matter, and contemporary interpretation. At the same time, the works of art themselves reflected upon and helped to define the social meanings of the space and the activities taking place there.
