The cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, France, is most famous as a failure - its choir vaults came crashing down in 1284 - and only secondarily for its soaring beauty. This illustrated book represents the first serious look at the stunning collection of Gothic stained glass windows that has always dominated the experience of those who enter Beauvais Cathedral.

Two examples of technical and physical evidence of early-medieval stained-glass workshop practices are examined. The examples comprise a group of 13 panels of French grisaille from various buildings, which date from the 1250s to the 1270s, and panels representing three standing bishops from the band windows in the Norman abbey church of Evron, which date from the second decade of the 14th century. All of the panels are now housed in the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The first group seems to provide an example of “ghost images”—corrosive imprints resulting from vaporized deposits transferred from one piece of glass …

This article introduces three fragments from a stained-glass cycle of the life of St. Peter, once part of the nave aisle glazing of the cathedral of Rouen. Although the evidence they offer is diminished by their partial preservation, when these panels are associated with a previously recognized panel depicting St. Peter in the Glencairn Museum, a narrative cycle can be documented and firmer conclusions can be drawn concerning stylistic relationships among the "Belles Verrières" of the Rouen nave aisle. The examination of these fragments from technical and physical--as well as stylistic--standpoints confirms an assessment of the early thirteenth-century stained-glass workshop …

The recomposed, much-altered, and partially dispersed vestiges of the original nave-aisle glazing of Rouen Cathedral--the so-called "Belles Verrières"--constitute one of the most important but least studied ensembles of early 13th-century French stained glass. This article will address two windows represented in the "Belles Verrières" as a means of exploring a working methodology for reconstructing the Rouen nave-aisle glazing. From a close analysis of all remaining fragments, the original design of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and John the Evangelist windows will be reconstructed. Once assembled, each window will be evaluated in relation to stylistic, iconographic and historical contexts. The iconography …
