Sociology Student Work Collection
Representations on television have lasting effects on those who watch it, especially children. Unfortunately, in such a male-dominated industry, the lack of women creating television content mean men are predominately telling women's stories.

Indigenous Representation In Cinema, Nathaniel Ninham
Indigenous Representation In Cinema, Nathaniel Ninham
2019 Cohort
Indigenous people are underrepresented offscreen on film-sets, and misrepresented onscreen. This has always been true in cinema and progress towards proper representation has been incredibly slow.
This has effects both on Indigenous people, and how the rest of society views them. It limits career opportunities for Indigenous filmmakers, restricts Indigenous role models on film, and reinforces cultural misunderstandings in society.

The sculptures displayed in this exhibition demonstrate knowledge transfer and cultural exchange between Aleksandar and Lingnan students in the process of creating site-specific works. They are largely made by timber from Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber, which was founded in North Point on Hong Kong Island in 1947, but later relocated to Chai Wan and then its current site in Kwu Tong, Sheung Shui in 1982. Unfortunately, this rare survivor of timber business has recently been identified as one of the first areas to be cleared for the controversial North East New Territories Development Plan launched by the HKSAR government. …

The Notorious Ben Hecht: Iconoclastic Writer And Militant Zionist, Julien Gorbach
The Notorious Ben Hecht: Iconoclastic Writer And Militant Zionist, Julien Gorbach
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Ben Hecht had seen his share of death-row psychopaths, crooked ward bosses, and Capone gun thugs by the time he had come of age as a crime reporter in gangland Chicago. His grim experience with what he called “the soul of man” gave him a kind of uncanny foresight a decade later, when a loose cannon named Adolf Hitler began to rise to power in central Europe.
In 1932, Hecht solidified his legend as "the Shakespeare of Hollywood" with his thriller Scarface, the Howard Hughes epic considered the gangster movie to end all gangster movies. But Hecht rebelled against his …

Simultaneous Learning About Research And Filmmaking: Informed Learning And Research Guides, Shelley Woods, Kathleen Cummins
Books & Chapters
Christine Bruce has written extensively about informed learning. Informed learning is “using information, creatively and reflectively, in order to learn” (2008, Preface). Bruce writes about informed learning as it relates to information literacy. Librarians, working collaboratively with professors, often develop research guides to teach information literacy skills, and to organize and present program, course, assignment or topic specific resources. Research is essential to documentary filmmaking. This chapter is a case study that describes how the History of Non-Fiction Film research guide that we created aligns with the three principles and seven faces of informed learning.

CDM Annual Reports
LETTER FROM THE DEAN
I am pleased to share with you the 2018-19 College of Computing and Digital Media (CDM) annual report, highlighting the important work done by our faculty, students, and staff. We’ve said this before, and we’ll say it again: it was a big year. In 2018-19, programs across all three of our schools (Computing, Cinematic Arts, and Design) were ranked nationally. Our faculty were published in dozens of scholarly journals, screened their films over 100 times, and had their work exhibited globally. Student and alumni accomplishments included an Emmy nomination, a first place win in a Department …

Engaging with fiction films devoted to heroic tales from the decade and a half between 1949 and 1966, this book reconceives state propaganda as aesthetic experiments that not only radically transformed acting, cinematography and screenwriting in socialist China, but also articulated a new socialist film theory and criticism. Rooted in the interwar avant-garde and commercial cinema, Chinese revolutionary cinema, as a state cinema for the newly established People's Republic, adapted Chinese literature for the screen, incorporated Hollywood narration, appropriated Soviet montage theory and orchestrated a new, glamorous, socialist star culture. In the wake of decolonisation, Chinese film journals were quick …
