How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D. Oct 2019

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D.

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

To resolve a moral dilemma created by the rescue of carnivorous species from exploitative situations who must rely on the flesh of other vulnerable species to survive, Cheryl Abbate applies the guardianship principle in proposing hunting as a case-by-case means of reducing harm to the rescued animal as well as to those animals who must die to supply food. This article counters that Abbate’s guardianship principle is insufficiently applied given its objectification of deer communities. Tom Regan, alternatively, encouraged guardians to think beyond individual dilemmas and adopt a measure of systemic reconstruction, that being the abolition of speciesist institutions (The …

A Person Is Born: Stalinist Myth Of The Great Family In Film Genres Of The Thaw, Alexander V. Prokhorov

Alexander Prokhorov

Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives On How The Use Of Toon Comic Books During Guided Reading Influenced Learning By Struggling Readers, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker, Samantha Mcgeorge

Gina Doepker

The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, specifically the TOON comic books during guided reading instruction. The instruction was provided to struggling readers by the Literacy Center at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. What most pre-service teachers in this study agreed upon was that comic books served as an effective tool for getting their students interested in reading. Reading comic books with tutors as partners in conversation with the struggling readers in this study was also a powerful medium for facilitating students’ literacy skills development, particularly in the areas of reading fluency and …

Street Life In London: Context And Commentary, Emily Morgan Mar 2019

Street Life In London: Context And Commentary, Emily Morgan

Emily Kathryn Morgan

This book is the first-ever in-depth analysis of the genesis, development and context of Smith and Thomson’s innovative publication. Now regarded as a pioneering photo-text and a foundational work of socially conscious photography – “one of the most significant and far-reaching photobooks in the medium’s history” (The Photobook: A History) – Street Life in London did not achieve commercial success in its own time. In Street Life in London we see the start, but not the conclusion, of a conversation between text and image in the service of education, reportage and social justice.

Feed: State Transparency Amidst Informational Surplus, Mark Fenster

Mark Fenster

An email arrives, promising inside information about the perfidious forces that secretly rule the nation. A Twitter feed from a prominent insider at an establishment think-tank announces the latest disclosure about the president’s secret role in the Russian conspiracy to manipulate the election that elevated him with the blast of toy cannon. Meanwhile, the President’s tweets serve to annoy, distract, humor, or comfort those who see them, and they above all announce some truth about his presidency.

Debates about government transparency presume that the state controls an informational spigot, which can be made to allow information to flow or to …

“Let’S Get Down To Business”: A Handbook Of Heroic Transformation In Mulan, Yun-Oh Park

Scott T. Allison

Walt Disney’s Mulan (1998) tells the heroic story of Fa Mulan, whose unique character is both female and Asian. Mulan, who is kind hearted, brave, and easy to relate to, has since become an international hero that continues to inspire an appreciation for and to highlight Asian culture in the media. The story is based on the legend of Hua Mulan, which was originally told as a poem known as the Ballad of Mulan. Since the legend has been passed down from as far back as the sixth century, thousands of people have recognized Hua Mulan as a hero. Today, …

Elle Woods, Legally Blonde, And The Hero’S Journey: What, Like, It’S Hard?, Reghan J. Ruf

Scott T. Allison

This chapter offers an analysis of the heroism of the character of Elle Woods in the movie 'Legally Blonde'. Elle must overcome judgmental, clique-ish Harvard Law students and the universal expectation that she will never make it through a semester at Harvard, let alone somehow come out on top. The belief that her appearance and her different socialization will cause her to completely fail at Harvard ends up helping her transform motivationally and intellectually in a manner consistent with underdog heroes.

Sectumsempra: An Analysis Of The Heroic Transformation Of Severus Snape, Jake C. Cardwell

Scott T. Allison

This chapter seeks to examine the character Severus Snape and his heroism. I will go about this task by analyzing Snape’s life and legacy, and judging him through several lenses of heroism science. Most importantly, the goal of this discussion is to determine whether or not Snape is truly a “hero.” Whether you love him or hate him, Severus Snape is one of the most recognizable literary characters of the twenty-first century, and his morality and merits are still talked about by fans of the Harry Potter franchise. I will use traditional archetypes and theories of heroism science to determine …

The Template Model: Putting Meaning At The Centre Of Film Education, Marc Barrett Oct 2018

The Template Model: Putting Meaning At The Centre Of Film Education, Marc Barrett

Marc Barrett

This article proposes a way for educators, and those who prepare their resources, to place meaning at the centre of film education, both in terms of creating filmic texts and in terms of comprehending them. It will take a social semiotic view of the primary tool in film education – the shot-type list – and suggest a way of supplanting the dominant perfunctory approach to the medium of film in Australian educational settings.

Wear And Care Feminisms At A Long Maker Table, Jacqueline Wernimont, Elizabeth M. Losh Aug 2018

Wear And Care Feminisms At A Long Maker Table, Jacqueline Wernimont, Elizabeth M. Losh

Elizabeth Losh

Although there is a deep history of feminist engagement with technology, the FemTechNet initiative (a feminist collective of which we are both a part) argues that such history is often hidden and that feminist thinkers are frequently siloed. At the same time, initiatives to promote critical making, acts of “shared construction” in which makers work to understand both the technologies and their social environments, often exclude women and girls from hacker/makerspaces that require both explicit permissions and access to implicit reserves of tacit knowledge. Even attempts to provide superficial hospitality can inflict microagressions on those who feel excluded from the …

Critical Animal And Media Studies: Expanding The Understanding Of Oppression In Communication Research, Nuria Almiron, Matthew Cole, Carrie P. Freeman Mar 2018

Critical Animal And Media Studies: Expanding The Understanding Of Oppression In Communication Research, Nuria Almiron, Matthew Cole, Carrie P. Freeman

Carrie P. Freeman

Critical and communication studies have traditionally neglected the oppression conducted by humans towards other animals. However, our (mis)treatment of other animals is the result of public consent supported by a morally speciesist-anthropocentric system of values. Speciesism or anthroparchy, as much as any other mainstream ideologies, feed the media and at the same time are perpetuated by them. The goal of this paper is to remedy this neglect by introducing the subdiscipline of Critical Animal and Media Studies (CAMS). CAMS takes inspiration both from critical animal studies, which is so far the most consolidated critical field of research in the social …

Kawabata And Cinema: The Ambivalence Of Knowledge, Medium, And Influence, Aaron Gerow Jan 2018

Kawabata And Cinema: The Ambivalence Of Knowledge, Medium, And Influence, Aaron Gerow

Aaron Gerow

Many researchers have considered the involvement of Kawabata Yasunari in cinema and the medium’s possible influence on his literature. Such approaches, however, tend to assume a definition of the motion pictures as visuality or montage that then influences Kawabata instead of first considering Kawabata’s own conception of cinema, his own film theory. By analyzing his writings on film, including his film criticism, short stories involving cinema, and his involvement in the film A Page of Madness, this paper outlines Kawabata’s conception of cinema and argues that he developed a portrait of cinema that posed it as a challenge to …

Apaches And Comanches On Screen, Kenneth Estes Hall

Kenneth Estes Hall

Excerpt: A generally accurate appraisal of Western films might claim that Indians as hostiles are grouped into one undifferentiated mass. Popular hostile groups include the Sioux (without much differentiation between tribes or bands, the Apaches, and the Comanches).
