Troubled Waters: Mid-Twentieth Century American Society On "Trial" In The Films Of John Waters, Taunya Lovell Banks
Troubled Waters: Mid-Twentieth Century American Society On "Trial" In The Films Of John Waters, Taunya Lovell Banks
Taunya Lovell Banks
In this Article Professor Banks argues that what makes many of filmmaker John Waters early films so subversive is his use of the “white-trash” body—people marginalized by and excluded from conventional white America—as countercultural heroes. He uses the white trash body as a surrogate for talk about race and sexuality in the early 1960s. I argue that in many ways Waters’ critiques of mid-twentieth century American society reflect the societal changes that occurred in the last forty years of that century. These societal changes resulted from the civil rights, gay pride, student, anti-war and women’s movements, all of which used …

The Quiet Man ... And Beyond: Reflections On A Classic Film, John Ford And Ireland, Seán Crosson Dr., Rod Stoneman
Seán Crosson
In 1996, The Quiet Man topped an Irish Times poll for the best Irish film of all time. Almost ten years later, with many more Irish (and Irish-themed) films made, The Quiet Man still occupied number four in a poll of 10,000 people across Ireland. John Ford's greatest commercial success, the film also set a template for Ireland's representation, and promotion, for over half a century. This book, The Quiet Man ... and Beyond, involves both critical analysis of aspects of The Quiet Man as myth, commodity and fetish and the celebration of a film that has sustained considerable academic …

Referring to her role in Avva (2008) in a television interview, Shruti, the actress, said: “Her sharp tongue itself is the machhu, longu in the film.” Her analogy affirms the wide popularity of what can be termed the Machhu Longu (ML) films in Kannada, all of which are set in the underworld.

[Excerpt] Organizing a film festival of pro-labor Hollywood films would be rather difficult. When unions do appear, they are often part of the subplot or the background for the main story line.

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen
Sherri L. Ter Molen
Because there has been a nursing shortage for the past decade and because the competition between employers for experienced registered nurses is fierce, I utilized archival quantitative data from a syndicated advertising database known as The Media Audit, quantitative data I collected from 100 surveys, qualitative data that I collected from 15 interviews, and qualitative data that I collected during 20 hours of observations in hospital cafeterias and nearby restaurants to discover how RNs use media, whether or not they share these media as an occupational co-culture, & their attitudes toward recruitment advertising in these media. This study draws upon …

Fighting Through Their Filmwork: The Waterside Workers’ Federation Film Unit, Lisa Milner
Fighting Through Their Filmwork: The Waterside Workers’ Federation Film Unit, Lisa Milner
Dr Lisa Milner
This essay examines the origins and development of a radical Australian film unit of the Cold War, the Waterside Workers’ Federation Film Unit (WWFFU). With the active support of the Communist-led Waterside Workers’ Federation, it arose in the 1950s in response to the repressive policies of a conservative government.
The Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit: The Forgotten Frontier Of The Fifties, Martha Ansara, Lisa Milner
The Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit: The Forgotten Frontier Of The Fifties, Martha Ansara, Lisa Milner
Dr Lisa Milner
This paper, written for the Fifth International Documentary Conference, Brisbane, 1997, offers a reappraisal of the historical status of Australian documentary, and, more generally, suggests the value of a revised view of Australian Cinema. In particular, Ansara and Milner look at the work of the Waterside Workers’ Federation Film Unit in the context of the rapid expansion of Australian film-making which took place in the 1950s. At the time, the ‘wharfies’ Film Unit opened a new frontier in documentary film-making in Australia, an endeavour which, in retrospect, provides a source of reflection upon our own documentary practices of today.
Commos And Ratbags: The Origins Of Trade Union Cinema In Australia, Lisa Milner
Commos And Ratbags: The Origins Of Trade Union Cinema In Australia, Lisa Milner
Dr Lisa Milner
A cultural criticism of Australian films representing the 1950s is presented, focusing on Michel Foucault's theoretical work on the construction of history. Topics addressed include the social and cultural aspects of remembering the past, the ability of storytelling to deconstruct privileged versions of history, and the self-conscious representation of the 1950s by independent Australian filmmakers in the 1970s.

Showing Some Fight: Kemira’S Challenge To Industrial Relations, Rebecca Coyle, Lisa Milner
Dr Lisa Milner
Inspired by the ‘Work Choices’ policies initiated by the Coalition-led Australian Federal Government in 2006, this paper offers a historical overview of Australian documentaries associated with industrial relations. Our paper will case study the 1984 film Kemira: Diary Of A Strike (dir. Tom Zubrycki) documenting the 1982 BHP sacking of 400 miners, and the 16-day occupation of the Kemira pit by 31 miners. As a government-funded, union-sanctioned and award-winning film, Kemira holds a particular place in Australian documentary genre. We will outline how the perspective of the film, which focused attention on the miners' families, was conveyed via the diegesis, …
Commos And Ratbags: Left-Wing Images Of Urban Australia, Lisa Milner
Commos And Ratbags: Left-Wing Images Of Urban Australia, Lisa Milner
Dr Lisa Milner
The cultural construction of the past in Australia has a variety of sources. There are the authorised, official histories in print, in the form of books, newspapers, journals, biographies. There are memories of lived experiences, and the recalling of stories passed down to us. Some of the most potent sites of remembering our more recent history are, however, to be found in visual media. Films and video productions engender their own historical consciousness, and validate their own sites of memory. In this paper I wish to open up a set of memories we have about life in Australia within a …

Looking For Fair Use In The Dmca's Safety Dance, Ira Nathenson
Looking For Fair Use In The Dmca's Safety Dance, Ira Nathenson
Ira Steven Nathenson
Like a ballet, the notice-and-take-down provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") provide complex procedures to obtain take-downs of online infringement. Copyright owners send notices of infringement to service providers, who in turn remove claimed infringement in exchange for a statutory safe harbor from copyright liability. But like a dance meant for two, the DMCA is less effective in protecting the "third wheel," the users of internet services. Even Senator John McCain - who in 1998 voted for the DMCA - wrote in exasperation to YouTube after some of his presidential campaign videos were removed due to take-downs. McCain …
