Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión
Job Mobility Of Entry-Level Workers: Black And Latina Women In Hospital Corridors, Maria Estella Carrión
New England Journal of Public Policy
Based on data from interviews with fifteen black and fifteen Latina women in entry-level jobs, this article discusses job access strategies, patterns of job mobility, and barriers to upward job mobility for low-income minority women in the hospital industry. Concentrated in the lowest wage levels and job tiers, they are quite diverse in subgroup composition, in age, and in training requirements. The research confirms that deficiencies in schooling and skills remain the major obstacles minority women confront when they apply for hospital jobs and restrict their opportunities once they are within the hospital labor market. Efforts to provide training and …

We Are The Roots: The Culture Of Home Health Aides, Ruth Glasser, Jeremy Brecher
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article focuses on the contributions of its workers' culture to the success of Cooperative Home Care Associates (CHCA). It examines what the home healthaides bring to the culture of the company, how their contribution develops through their experience with the company, and how their heritage contributes to their CHCA work and to the company as an organization. This is one segment of a larger study that will deal with the background and history of CHCA, the vision of the founders and its implementation, the role of organizational policy, and the contribution of management philosophy to its accomplishment.
Allied Health Professions In The Health-Sector Job Structure, Françoise J. Carré
Allied Health Professions In The Health-Sector Job Structure, Françoise J. Carré
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article reviews the characteristics of allied health professions in the U.S., Massachusetts, and Boston health sectors. These occupations are considered in the broader context of the multitiered job structure of the health sector and their gender and ethnic composition. The discussion includes surveys of vacancy rates and wage levels for selected allied health professions in Massachusetts hospitals. The article concludes with a more detailed, albeit national, picture of these occupations in the hospital sector per se, their demographic composition, and earnings level.
Conceiving Identity: Bisexual, Lesbian And Gay Parents Consider Their Children's Sexual Orientations, Carrie Yang Costello
Conceiving Identity: Bisexual, Lesbian And Gay Parents Consider Their Children's Sexual Orientations, Carrie Yang Costello
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study demonstrates the inadequacy of the traditional theory of childhood socialization and identity formation, which holds that children are socialized to internalize the key parameters of their parents' identities. The lesbian, gay and bisexual parents studied were willing actively to foster a sexual identity different from their own in their children. This illustrates that parents may seek to shape the process of internalization so that their children are able to develop identities fundamentally different from their own. The implication for social work is that adoptive or birth parents may successfully instill identities in their children which differ from their …
Cardinal's The Words To Say It: The Words To Reproduce Mother, Eilene Hoft-March
Cardinal's The Words To Say It: The Words To Reproduce Mother, Eilene Hoft-March
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The Words to Say it, an autobiographical novel by Algerian-born Frenchwoman Marie Cardinal, earned praise for the accuracy with which it documents a classic psychoanalysis. Quickly sketched, the plot seems to suggest that the separation from an overpowering mother is effected by paternal language and phallic law—the normal, normative psychic itinerary of the human subject. In its reconsideration of the Oedipal, this essay explores Irigaray's idea of the ambiguities of separation from mother and the possibility that the story of (feminine) subjectivity begins with the mother, begins with affiliation and affirmation even as it speaks of separateness. From this …
Ideology, Family Policy, Production, And (Re)Education: Literary Treatment Of Abortion In The Gdr Of The Early 1980s, Heinz Bulmahn
Ideology, Family Policy, Production, And (Re)Education: Literary Treatment Of Abortion In The Gdr Of The Early 1980s, Heinz Bulmahn
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
The decision by the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe of placing restrictions on the right to an abortion will profoundly affect German women's right to choose. This decision is a culmination of efforts to errode the right to choose for West as well as East German women. In the former GDR, even though liberal abortion laws allowed women access to free abortions, for ideological reasons, the government devised policies that discouraged abortions as a means of birth control. This policy becomes particularly apparent in the early 1980s when the East German government, confronted with a declining birth rate, faced the dilemma …
From The Sea Wall To The Lover : Prostitution And Exotic Parody, Pascale Bécel
From The Sea Wall To The Lover : Prostitution And Exotic Parody, Pascale Bécel
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This analysis of the two novels highlights Marguerite Duras' equivocal stance with regard to colonial Indochina where she grew up at the beginning of the century. As The Lover rewrites The Sea Wall in the autobiographical mode, the emphasis shifts from an explicit denunciation of colonialism and an implicit subversion of the Lotilian novel, to a parody of exotic themes and narratives. However, by focusing on the two young protagonists' construction of themselves as femmes fatales and prostitutes, this discussion reveals that the politics of gender and race remain at odds in Duras' fictional autobiographies. The cultural other (qua a …
Madness And The Middle Passage: Warner-Vierya's Juletane As A Paradigm For Writing Caribbean Women's Identities, Ann Elizabeth Willey
Madness And The Middle Passage: Warner-Vierya's Juletane As A Paradigm For Writing Caribbean Women's Identities, Ann Elizabeth Willey
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article links Glissant's theory of an inherent Caribbean madness due to the originary rupture and alienation from Africa with Foucault's theory of the ritual significance and essential liminality of the madman as exemplified in the medieval figure of the "Ship of Fools." In calling the madman the "passenger par excellence," Foucault implies a connection between sanity and linear narratives, such as that of a voyage. Myriam Warner-Vierya's novel, Juletane, suggests that European paradigms of narrative and voyage are inadequate to provide a sense of self for Caribbean women. The novel takes the form of a diary that chronicles …

Lavinia Dock: Adams County Suffragette, Mary Lou Schwartz
Lavinia Dock: Adams County Suffragette, Mary Lou Schwartz
Adams County History
In the aftermath of the anniversary celebrations held to commemorate women's right to vote, it is fitting to remember an Adams county resident who figured prominently in the most militant phase of the suffrage campaign-Lavinia Lloyd Dock.
Lavinia Dock was born February 26, 1858, the second child of Gilliard and Lavinia Lloyd Bombaugh Dock. Gilliard, who had attended Gettysburg College, was a well-to-do engineer and machinist. Both parents were liberal in their views. Lavinia said that "Father had some whimsical masculine prejudices, but Mother was broad on all subjects and very tolerant and charitable towards persons." Although the family, eventually …
