The Penetration Of Social Media In Governance,Political Reforms And Building Public Perception, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr May 2011

The Penetration Of Social Media In Governance,Political Reforms And Building Public Perception, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. While we know that social media can play an important role in publicizing political activities such as protests, do we have evidence that such actions have led to substantive political change? Is it possible to develop a set of indicators to more effectively gauge the impact of new technologies and media on questions of political change? That social media can help coordinate large and discrete activities, such as protests and …

A Long Battle For The Girl Child By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel May 2011

A Long Battle For The Girl Child By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

The Forum against Sex Determination and Sex Preselection began its campaign in Mumbai against discriminatory abortions of female foetuses in April 1986. In the 25 years since then, laws have been enacted against the practice but female foeticide continues. It is a major challenge to fight the use of pre-selection techniques for sonpreference without jeopardising women’s right to safe abortion.

Gender, Education, Background And Career Progression: Case Study Of Radcliffe College Graduates, Jennifer O'Connor Duffy May 2011

Gender, Education, Background And Career Progression: Case Study Of Radcliffe College Graduates, Jennifer O'Connor Duffy

Jennifer O'Connor Duffy

This study explores the professional development of female graduates of Radcliffe College, an Ivy League college in the USA. A secondary statistical analysis of the 1977 Radcliffe Centennial Survey shows how changing social, political, institutional, and economic forces influenced the post-graduate career pathways of female alumnae. Independent of era, a Radcliffe degree could propel most women to the second tier professional status level of managers. Regardless of social class background, the women experienced similar career trajectories. However it was extremely rare for these women to climb to the highest step on the career ladder, indicating the difficulties of overcoming institutional …

Two Faces Of Media While Covering Human Right Activities In India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Apr 2011

Two Faces Of Media While Covering Human Right Activities In India, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The situation of human rights in India is a complex one, as a result of the country's large size and tremendous diversity, its status as a developing country and a sovereign, secular, democratic republic, and its history as a former colonial territory. The Constitution of India provides for Fundamental rights, which include freedom of religion. Clauses also provide for Freedom of Speech, as well as separation of executive and judiciary and freedom of movement within the country and abroad. In its report on human rights in India during 2010, Human Rights Watch stated India had "significant human rights problems". They …

Language Discourse- A Critical Analysis Of Michel Focault's Work On Language Discourse With Special Reference To His Masterpiece "The Archeology Of Knowledge", Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr Apr 2011

Language Discourse- A Critical Analysis Of Michel Focault's Work On Language Discourse With Special Reference To His Masterpiece "The Archeology Of Knowledge", Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Discourse generally refers to "written or spoken communication or debate". The following are three more specific definitions: (1) In semantics and discourse analysis: A generalization of the concept of conversation to all modalities and contexts. (2) "The totality of codified linguistic usages attached to a given type of social practice. (E.g.: legal discourse, medical discourse, religious discourse.)" (3) In the work of Michel Foucault, and social theorists inspired by him: "an entity of sequences of signs in that they are enouncements (enoncés)" (Foucault 1969: 141). An enouncement (often translated as "statement") is not a unity of signs, but an abstract …

Cell Phones From Hell, Steven Bruhm Dec 2010

Cell Phones From Hell, Steven Bruhm

Steven Bruhm

Recently Hollywood has remade a number of movies from the 1970s, movies in which young women are terrorized by a murderer calling from a telephone located elsewhere in the house. In the remakes, the murderer uses a cell phone, which effectively destroys the sense of space and distance on which earlier horror films were predicated. In one way, these films gesture to Jean Baudrillard's idea of “the transparency of evil,” in that they depict the collapse between the speaking self and the technologies of monstrosity against which the self might be defined. In another way, though, the films proliferate sites …

Revisiting/Revising Art And Home: (Be)Longing And Identity In Out-Of-School Art Education Settings, Courtney Lee Weida Dec 2010

Revisiting/Revising Art And Home: (Be)Longing And Identity In Out-Of-School Art Education Settings, Courtney Lee Weida

Courtney Lee Weida

This paper addresses teaching artists and explores the notion of home, in terms of rich spaces and possibilities of art education within and outside of schools. Art educators locate themselves in the realm of schools as well as the art world, through their dual roles as artist and teachers. An interest in the idea of origins, home, and space can also illuminate different conceptions and constructions of the art room. We even classify visiting or guest teaching artists within “artist residencies,” implying artists actually reside or live in particular art education spaces, as if these spaces were homes. Many art …

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison Dec 2010

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …

The Man In The Text: Desire, Masculinity, And The Development Of Poe's Detective Fiction, Peter J. Goodwin Dec 2010

The Man In The Text: Desire, Masculinity, And The Development Of Poe's Detective Fiction, Peter J. Goodwin

Peter J Goodwin

This article finds the kernel of Poe's detective fiction in his investigations into the construction of "gentlemanliness" that he began at Burton's Gentleman's Magazine. As precursors to Poe's tales of ratiocination, "The Man That Was Used Up" and "The Man of the Crowd" train the reader not to expect a satisfying conclusion to the mystery surrounding masculinity that the author has woven. In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," the homoerotic desire to apprehend an integral masculine subject ends in frustration bordering on the absurd. In thus undermining the American ideal of masculinity as unified, integral, impenetrable, and fraternal, Poe …

Effeminacy In The Shadow Of Empire: The Politics Of Transgressive Gender In Josephus's Bellum Judaicum, Jason Von Ehrenkrook Dec 2010

Effeminacy In The Shadow Of Empire: The Politics Of Transgressive Gender In Josephus's Bellum Judaicum, Jason Von Ehrenkrook

Jason von Ehrenkrook

[...]it is now widely agreed that gender in antiquity was viewed, at least from the perspective of the surviving male elite literary sources (an important qualification indeed!), through a single-gender, and not surprisingly androcentric, conceptual framework.6 Virginia Burras 's recent assessment of the current state of scholarship is worth noting in this regard: [...]I have argued that Josephus's invective against John and his rebel cohort should be read within a wider Roman discourse on trasgressive gender, both the tendency in political invective to cast tyrants as effeminate objects of anal penetration, as well as the gendered power structures integral to …

Gender, Aesthetics, And Sexuality In Play: Uneasy Lessons From Girls' Dolls, Action Figures, And Television Programs, Courtney Lee Weida Dec 2010

Gender, Aesthetics, And Sexuality In Play: Uneasy Lessons From Girls' Dolls, Action Figures, And Television Programs, Courtney Lee Weida

Courtney Lee Weida

How does children's play with dolls and action figures engender exploration of gendered identities: from aesthetics and appearances, to social standards, and various rituals and performances? This paper examines recent research in art education and gender studies concerning dolls and figural toys marketed to girls. As an artist and teacher educator, I will draw upon my teaching experiences and examine artifacts of pedagogy from popular material culture. I will address issues of consumption while taking into consideration taboos of gender and sexuality within public and private play. While children's toys as symbolic bodies may pose narrowly gendered and heteronormative models …

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2010

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …
