Towards Multispecies Solidarity: Individual Stories Of Learning To Consume Ethically, Elisabeth Valiente-Riedl
Towards Multispecies Solidarity: Individual Stories Of Learning To Consume Ethically, Elisabeth Valiente-Riedl
Animal Studies Journal
This research problematises the translation of economic agency into political agency through ethical consumption. Employing narrative enquiry, the experiences and perceptions of three young women are documented and analysed. This permits a grounded examination of the advocacy and consumption nexus, including participants relative prioritisation of (competing) ethical values and practices relative to traditional consumption concerns. A key finding is that prioritisation of wellbeing, comprising that of humans, animals and other forms of life, requires a rearticulation of the traditional concept of ‘political solidarity’ to a more multifaceted conception of ‘multispecies solidarity’. Moreover, conception of self and of solidarity through consumption …

[Review] David Brooks, The Grass Library. Brandl And Scheslinger, 2019. 223pp, Wendy Woodward
Animal Studies Journal
The Grass Library constitutes its own genre – a memoir of embodied humans and animals who write themselves not quite equally into the text – the nonhuman takes precedence. On the cover, fittingly, the human is an absence although there is evidence in the background, full bookshelves and a water bowl lovingly placed on a window shelf. In the foreground is one of the principal subjects, an assertive presence who gazes directly at the viewer with sheep-openness and beauty. Brooks mentions an antiquarian library elsewhere that had been subjected to ‘the scrutiny of grass’ (65). This book too has been …

"What is spirituality? Is this all about God? And what is God? A mystical concept? All I know that if we surrender to the will of God, if we pray and repent for our sins, we will be saved out of our trouble and we will get peace of mind. To me, my dance is my God. Through my dance I have touched the essence of spirituality."

In Between Realms: The Search For Feminine Selfhood In The Essais Of Montaigne, Anna Suarez
In Between Realms: The Search For Feminine Selfhood In The Essais Of Montaigne, Anna Suarez
Comparative Woman
My purpose is to explore factors of the Renaissance that determined women’s selfhood in Montaigne’s Essais. I argue that the shift into modernity is responsible for the loss of women’s autonomy as well as the anxiety experienced by men regarding their power as well as their potential. Montaigne and Renaissance discourse defines women only by their bodies (sexual organs) and I explore the elements that established biological essentialism. This paper exemplifies comparative literature in the sense that it combines literature, theory, and art for the purpose of creating a well-researched examination of the root causes for why women were …

A year after Alyssa Milano’s tweet launched the #MeToo movement, survivors of sexual assault are being called ‘accusers’ in the media, and public opinion is swinging in favor of guilty men. #MeToo raised awareness but not understanding. What is rape? What is consent? As evidenced by the #MeToo movement and the backlash against it, clearly, as a society, we don’t know. Contact is a work of Creative Nonfiction that uses scenes and details from the narrator’s personal experiences to illuminate the micro-negotiations that occur in sex and seduction.
In a world where women are still expected to stay small and …

The author argues a much neglected element in the seminal Hemingway's story "Hills Like White Elephant." Reading the story by taking into context a subtext of racial bias lends new interpretation to the story.
