This study deals with the history of New Mexico as it affects the crafts. It covers the general history and techniques of spinning, loom development and weaving. It considers designs of 17th century Spain and Colonial Mexico and the misinterpretation of designs in New Mexico. It deals primarily with the Spaniards and their descendants who will hereafter be referred to as New Mexicans. Linguistic influences and changes are noted whenever they apply to the crafts. The Indian weaving is discussed only insofar as it helps to understand the New Mexican. Conclusions concerning the craft are drawn both from the study …
