A study of the Mexican people as seen in their short story offers several advantages. The presentations of extensive variations of the human panorama supply an autochthonous basis for insight. In these presentations, one gains an acquaintance, at times surprisingly intimate, with the people. The short-story writers do not neglect any social level. What they observe become themes for their creativeness. They include the submissive as well as the arrogant, the poor, the suppressed, the ignorant, the mentally ill; all are worthy of their consideration.
