This collaborative literary history of Europe, the first yet attempted, unfolds through ten sequences of places linked by trade, travel, topography, language, pilgrimage, alliance, disease, and artistic exchange. The period covered, 1348-1418, provides deep context for understanding current developments in Europe, particularly as initiated by the destruction and disasters of World War II. We begin with the greatest of all European catastrophes: the 1348 bubonic plague, which killed one person in three. Literary cultures helped speed recovery from this unprecedented "ground zero" experience, providing solace, distraction, and new ideals to live by. Questions of where Europe begins and ends, then …

The Material Life of Roman Slaves complements and enriches a growing body of scholarship on the physical conditions and material remains of Roman slavery, but it also represents a logical continuation of the research agenda of both authors. It is clearly informed by Joshel’s book about occupational titles in funerary inscriptions (Work, Identity, and Legal Status at Rome: A Study of the Occupational Inscriptions [1992]) and Petersen’s study on the visual culture of freedmen and its perception (The Freedman in Roman Art and Art History [2006]). Their collaboration on the present book represents a model of scholarly teamwork that bridges …

Globalization's Shift In Accountability: Textile Suppliers And Merchants In 18th And 21st Century Bangladesh, Margaret Jennings
Globalization's Shift In Accountability: Textile Suppliers And Merchants In 18th And 21st Century Bangladesh, Margaret Jennings
jenningsmargaret@icloud.com
The British East India Company in the 18th century and Wal-Mart in the 21st century share synonymous business practices: the exchange between a less developed nation's unlimited labor force and a developed country's insatiable appetite for cheap garments. By contrasting two events of corruption charges, the Warren Hastings' Trial of the Century and the Tazreen Factory Fire of 2012 illustrate how the accountability of the exchange between the merchant and the suppliers has shifted.

I’m in the process of completing the final draft on my biography book, “AN ACCOUNT OF MY LIFE’S BLESSINGS And MY SPANISH ANCESTORS - Among the First Families of New Mexico” that will go out for further editing and for additional information and commentaries to be inserted. I’m still trying to organize an area in the book for additional documents/photos that I still have to scan and upload onto the hard drive/CD for the final print. This has been more of an effort, or so it seems, than researching and writing my PhD dissertation, or at least I’ve put in …

Educators, international scholars, students and historians from the region and from universities across the United States recently gathered at Sacred Heart University for a conference dedicated to Irish history, literature, economics, politics and religion. The New England meeting of the Regional American Conference for Irish History, held annually, made its way to Fairfield for the first time, thanks to a collaborative effort led by John B. Roney, professor and chair of Sacred Heart’s Department of History. Keynote speaker Dr. Eamonn Wall.

From The Enlightenment To Genocide: The Evolution And Devolution Of Romanian Nationalism, Shawn E. Wooster
Shawn E Wooster Mr.
Romanian nationalism, developed during the first phase of modernization, was significantly influenced by Enlightenment philosophy and by its corollary, Enlightened Despotism. Ernest Gellner and Benedict Anderson's theories of nationalism's origins are pertinent explaining Romanian nationalism, but are too narrow to consider Romania's unique geographical and cultural conditions. Romania's uniqueness facilitated the creation of "Romanianness,"or ethic consciousness, in eighteenth-century, preindustrial Transylvania without a well-established elite, and it continued to evolve without state-sponsored educational policies. Ethnic consciousness eventually transformed into the racism and genocidal nationalism of World War Two, thus straying from typologies expounded by Gellner and Anderson.
