Public Versus Private Spheres Of Domesticity, Jessie F. Mizic May 2015

Public Versus Private Spheres Of Domesticity, Jessie F. Mizic

TAC Talks

My research is a close reading of The Awakening by Kate Chopin written in 1899 as a critique of the cult of true womanhood. While ideologies that promote the spheres of domesticity have existed for hundreds of years, it wasn’t until Barbara Welter’s 1976 article, “The Cult of True Womanhood” that the four main tenets that these ideologies were named; piety, purity, submissiveness and domesticity. The last Virtue in the Cult of True Womanhood is the tenet of Domesticity. This was important in establishing the realms of public and private domestic spheres for men and women during this era. Men …

Representation Of The Mother’S Body As A Narrative Conduit For Wartime Themes In Saga, Bess Pallares May 2015

Representation Of The Mother’S Body As A Narrative Conduit For Wartime Themes In Saga, Bess Pallares

Student Research Symposium

“Representation of the Mother’s Body as a Narrative Conduit for Wartime Themes in Saga” examines how both diagetic and extradiagetic art creates a visual syuzhet to convey themes of interdependence and transgenerational memory in the comic book series Saga. My method of research was a narrative analysis of volumes 1-4 of Saga, particularly focusing on the artistic representation of two mothers’ bodies within the narrative and on covers of the books, as related to the themes and story. As a result, I found in the artistic syuzhet that the representation of two characters’ bodies as they interact …

A Proposal For Dealing With Underage Drinking At Colby, Matthew Mckinney

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

This project details the drinking endemic at Colby college. Students consume alcohol despite the age limit, and face little resistance from campus administration/security. With such little regard for, and such little enforcement of the law, it has begun to lose it's authority. Is this a problem at Colby? If so, is it one of student action, or a lack of administrative response?

Uses Of Someone: Beyond Simple Person Reference, Yu-Han Lin Apr 2015

Uses Of Someone: Beyond Simple Person Reference, Yu-Han Lin

Purdue Linguistic Association Symposium

This study looks at how the non-recognitional reference form “someone” is used to refer to a known referent when a recognitional, such as a first name or a descriptive recognitional (Stiver, 2007), is available (Sacks & Schegloff, 1979). In a conversation, when participants have shared knowledge about who a referent is, the occurrence of “someone” connotes more than a simple reference to the referent. While there is little previous research concerning the use of a non-recognitional to complete particular social actions, in this study, I show how “someone” can be employed to accomplish disaffiliative actions such as complaints, accusations and …

Politics Of Identity And Oppression In Rhys’S Voyage In The Dark, Ellen Michelle Stringer Apr 2015

Politics Of Identity And Oppression In Rhys’S Voyage In The Dark, Ellen Michelle Stringer

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

In this essay, “Politics of Identity and Oppression in Rhys’s Voyage in the Dark” I aim to explore the ways in which identity and the idea of the constructed ‘self’ are both created and continuously transformed by one’s experiences and memories. I argue that the protagonist of Rhys’s novel’s identity is ultimately shaped by her racialized experiences of growing up in the West Indies. In my discussion I analyze the color metaphors Rhys utilizes and the impact they have upon readers’ unconscious perceptions about race, ultimately aiming to deconstruct the commonly assumed/utilized dichotomy between white/black. I use these notions of …
