The Impact Of Canadian Social Discourses On L2 Writing Pedagogy In Ontario, Amir Kalan
The Impact Of Canadian Social Discourses On L2 Writing Pedagogy In Ontario, Amir Kalan
Amir Kalan
This paper attempts to illustrate the impact of Canadian social, political, and academic discourses on second language writing pedagogy in Ontario schools. Building upon the views that regard teacher knowledge as teachers’ sociocultural interactions and lived experiences, and not merely intellectual capabilities gained within teacher preparation, this article proposes that the impact of dominant social discourses on classroom practice might be more profound than teachers’ creativity and initiative. This idea is demonstrated by examining the findings of a grounded theory study of frequently employed strategies that can deal with intercultural rhetoric in EAL (English as an additional language) academic writing. …

Dark Avunculate: Shame, Animality, And Queer Development In Oscar Wilde’S “The Star-Child”, Rasmus R. Simonsen
Rasmus R Simonsen, PhD
This article will outline the inequalities of the relationship between the Star-Child and his temporary master, known only as the Magician, in order to argue that Wilde’s fairy tale should be read as the formalization of a queer interval that traumatizes the Victorian norm of maturation. This is not to suggest that “Wilde’s Victorian readers [would] seem to have found [any]thing untoward about the fairy tales” (Duffy 328); nothing, at least, that hinted at the “homoromantic dimensions” which were to become so devastatingly central to his libel trial of 1895 (338). John-Charles Duffy has nevertheless shown that a complex interweaving …

Elderly Korean Learners' Participation In English Learning Through Lifelong Education: Focusing On Motivation And Demotivation, Tae-Young Kim, Yoon-Kyoung Kim
Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)
This study explores motivational and demotivational factors in English learning among elderly learners attending a lifelong education institute located in Seoul, South Korea. A total of 420 elderly learners with limited English learning experience responded to a questionnaire with 47 five-point Likert-type items. In order to investigate what factors encourage and discourage elderly learners in their participation in English learning, we conducted factor analysis, which indicated five motivational and three demotivational constructs. The motivational factor of self-actualization proved the most influential, while pressure from the Graduation Equivalency Examination was the most demotivating. It was found that the motivational factors demonstrated …

A Critical Study Of Language Minority Students' Participation In Language Communities In The Korean Context, Miso Kim, Tae-Young Kim
Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)
In South Korea, Damunwha students (students from multicultural family backgrounds) have difficulties at school because of others’ derogatory perception of them and the different linguistic and cultural settings. In light of this issue, this paper addresses the Damunwha students’ identities and participation within the language communities from a community of practice perspective and a critical pedagogy perspective. Four students (two from international marriage families and two from immigrant workers’ families), their teachers, and their supervisors participated in the study from March to April 2013. The findings suggest that Damunwha students’ participation in Korean society depends on their resources, others’ perception …

Cavallo's provocative title suggests the essence of her argument: the Orlando Innamoratois a didactic poem in which the poet "presents a coherent moral vision of love as well as a program for a humanist use of literature" (10).

In Chaucerian Polity David Wallace makes "visible, through an expansion of temporal and spatial parametersr, elations and developments that would otherwise remain obscured or unconnected"( xvii). Specifically, through examination of the political structures of fourteenth-century Florence and Milan, to which Chaucer was exposed on his travels, Wallace makes Chaucer's political thought visible.
Orientalisation Through Paratexts: The Covers Of Muslim Memoirs, Esmaeil Zeiny
Orientalisation Through Paratexts: The Covers Of Muslim Memoirs, Esmaeil Zeiny

The influx of memoirs by and about Iranian women has saturated the post-9/11 Western literary market. These memoirs, which emerged after 9/11 and the President Bush’s ‘Axis of Evil’ speech addressed to Iran, North Korea and Iraq, are written to quench the curiosity of the Western readers. However many of these memoirists have adopted Western Orientalism framework in writing their discourse. They use the Iranian psyche, people, culture and religious worlds to reproduce the Western bias against the ‘Other.’ This portrayal of Western Orientalism ‘otherness’, which oftentimes begins right from the covers of the memoirs, can be called orientalisation through …

... white envy of black history, even though that history is written with whips and chains, extends to countless other visual and aural signifiers of black culture; in today's suburban enclaves it's hip-hop culture that brings the 'flava' to what many white kids apprehend as a flavorless cultural landscape.
The Visual Experience Of Image Metaphor: Cognitive Insights Into Imagist Figures, Daniel W. Gleason
The Visual Experience Of Image Metaphor: Cognitive Insights Into Imagist Figures, Daniel W. Gleason
Dan Gleason
In this essay I investigate how image metaphors – metaphors that link one concrete object to another, such as “her spread hand was a starfish” – promote visualization in the reader. Focusing on image metaphors in Imagist poetry, I assert that the two terms (e.g., the hand and the starfish) of many of these metaphors are similar in shape, and that this “structural correspondence” encourages the reader to visualize those metaphors. Readers may spontaneously form a “visual template,” a schematic middle ground that mediates between those similar shapes, in order to smoothly move between the two images within each metaphor. …

The Bonds Of Love And The Boundaries Of Self In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", Barbara Schapiro
The Bonds Of Love And The Boundaries Of Self In Toni Morrison's "Beloved", Barbara Schapiro
Barbara A Schapiro
Toni Morrison's Beloved penetrates, perhaps more deeply than any historical or psychological study could, the unconscious emotional and psychic consequences of slavery. The novel reveals how the condition of enslavement in the external world, particularly the denial of one's status as a human subject, has deep repercussions in the individual's internal world. These internal resonances are so profound that even if one is eventually freed from external bondage, the self will still be trapped in an inner world that prevents a genuine experience of freedom. As Sethe succinctly puts it, "Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed …
The Transgression Of Maacah In 2 Chronicles 15:16: A Simple Case Of Idolatry Or The Threatening Poesis Of Maternal Speech?, Julie Kelso
Julie Kelso
Extract:
In this essay, I shall argue that in Chronicles Maacah is not simply deposed because she is an idolater. Rather, in an important sense Maacah’s act of producing an idol for the goddess Asherah threatens patrilineal, patriarchal social order itself, as it is constructed and understood in Chronicles. Specifically, her act undermines the dominant (unconscious) phantasy at work in Chronicles: that of masculine, monosexual (re)production. To sustain itself, this phantasy requires the ‘silence’ or non-representation of the maternal body. In other words, it is not simply Maacah’s idolatry that sees her punished; it is her daring production of the …

Why Should Feminists Read The Bible?, Julie Kelso
Julie Kelso
Extract:
For many contemporary feminists, the Bible evokes a backward thinking, patriarchally defined body of literature and a social, political and economic ideological framework that has historically been used to maintain and perpetuate the oppression of women, along with that of non-white and/or non-Judeo-Christian 'others'.

Politicizing The (In)Audible : A Short Critique Of Mark Brett's Genesis (With Specific Reference To Genesis 34), Julie Kelso
Julie Kelso
In his recent book, _Genesis: Procreation and the Politics of Identity_, Mark Brett argues that Genesis (the first book of the Hebrew Bible) is a political text that addresses the debates within the `post-exilic' or `Persian' period concerning the nature of Israelite identity. The dominant push for ethnic purity found in the postexilic books of Ezra and Nehemiah is time and again undermined in Genesis by an integrationist polemic against the priestly desire for the `holy seed.' In other words, Brett argues that there is a discernible, 'inclusivist' (anti-ethnocentric) voice in Genesis. In this essay, I dispute the value he …
