"Mark In This": Strategies Of Persuasion And Argument In John Donne's Poetry, Nazreen Laffir
"Mark In This": Strategies Of Persuasion And Argument In John Donne's Poetry, Nazreen Laffir
Honors College Theses
Whether he is writing an erotic lyric, a mutual love poem or a holy sonnet, John Donne's poems employ a similar argumentative structure. Although "The Flea", an erotic lyric, "The Canonization", a mutual love poem, and "Batter My Heart", a holy sonnet portray different types of love, Donne's argumentative structure in these poems is similar to each other. In "The Flea", "The Canonization" and "Batter My Heart", Donne's speakers present a claim or command which they defend throughout the rest of the poem. The speakers use persuasive strategies to defend and validate their assertion. As the poems conclude, the speakers …

From The Stage To The World: The Moralizing Methods Of Sir Richard Steele, Shelah Y. Simpson
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis looks at the life and literary works of Sir Richard Steel as they relate to his well-defined moral code. It analyzes the sentimentality and comedy which he works into his narratives and discusses how he uses these methods to communicate his sense of morality to his audience.
Failing To Connect: Dialogue And Love In E.M. Forster's The Life To Come, Joshua Sanborn
Failing To Connect: Dialogue And Love In E.M. Forster's The Life To Come, Joshua Sanborn
English Seminar Capstone Research Papers
Upon being informed that a piece of his posthumously published homoerotic literature was being used as a device for reigniting a productive dialogue of love between the gay and the Evangelical Christian, E.M. Forster would assuredly bristle with skepticism and doubt, if not outright disgust. Readers and critics who have reserved an iconic position for Forster in the chronology of gay liberation literature would likely evince a similar knee-jerk reaction. Admittedly, the writer's lifelong tendency to chafe uneasily against what he most often depicted as a doctrine of hypocrisy appears to be an obstacle which precludes utilizing his text The …
"On And On" Until "All Out": Seeking Silence Within The Postmodern Paradigm Of Samuel Beckett, Rachel Ganong
"On And On" Until "All Out": Seeking Silence Within The Postmodern Paradigm Of Samuel Beckett, Rachel Ganong
English Seminar Capstone Research Papers
In his biography of Samuel Beckett's life, James Knowlson writes that Beckett failed miserably as a teacher; had Beckett not failed, he would have spent his life as a scholar, teaching and writing brilliant essays like his award winning Proust study. The sizable amount of literature on Beckett's creative writing, however, seems to indicate that Beckett's pedagogic failure metamorphosed into a dazzling success for the humanity, which so frequently themes his work, through literature. Yet, some groups, proponents of Christianity in particular, might have preferred for Beckett's influence to have trickled through the one or two schools in which he …

Textual Possession: Manipulating Narratives In Wilkie Collins's Sensation Fiction, Kieran Ayton
Textual Possession: Manipulating Narratives In Wilkie Collins's Sensation Fiction, Kieran Ayton
Honors Projects
Examines the mechanisms through which Collins updated the gothic novel to create the sensation novel, with particular emphasis on The Woman in White, The Law and the Lady, and The Haunted Hotel. Highlights Collins's use of transgressive gender characterization, whereby his main characters use documents to gain social power over other characters. Describes the influence of Ann Radcliffe's gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, on The Woman in White.

Hogging The Limelight: The Queen's Wake And The Rise Of Celebrity Authorship, Jason N. Goldsmith
Hogging The Limelight: The Queen's Wake And The Rise Of Celebrity Authorship, Jason N. Goldsmith
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In the following essay, Goldsmith argues that The Queen's Wake is commentary on the literary name branding inaugurated by the periodical culture of Hogg's day. For Goldsmith, the "crisis of reception" staged in the poem--sixteenth-century provincial bards in a first encounter with royal spectacle--is not unlike the uneasy celebrity Hogg experienced as the Ettrick Shepherd of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine.

(The Princess and the Goblin at the Gordon Schools, Huntly, December 15 through 17, 2004)
The Gordon Schools' production of The Princess and the Goblin was a treat. In Stuart Paterson's adaptation for the stage, George MacDonald's fable retains its particular charm; but, being a tale of good versus evil, it also provides the elements of pantomime.

An English Heritage blue plaque was unveiled by the wellknown biographer and novelist A.N. Wilson at Tudor Lodge, 20 Albert Street, Camden Town in north London on Tuesday 28th June. George MacDonald and his family lived at Tudor Lodge from 1860 to 1863 in the early days of his career as a writer. The plaque describes MacDonald most appropriately as a 'Story Teller'. Mr. Wilson made a speech quoting from his favourite MacDonald book, At the Back of the North Wind. Then the Society's Chairman, Richard Lines, made a short speech giving an overview of MacDonald's significance, followed by John …

Malory’S Maladies: Determining Intention And Influence Through Editorial Theory In Sir Thomas Malory’S Le Morte Darthur, Lisa Ann Stuchell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
By examining both William Caxton’s edition and the Winchester manuscript of Malory’s King Arthur tales, readers can begin to understand the editorial theory issues associated with these dissimilar texts. Questions concerning authorial intention, final intention, versions, and scholarly editing arise as scholars and readers try to negotiate which is the better version. However, each version offers advantages and disadvantages of Malory’s work, culminating in the need for both versions to exist and to be studied.
Complexity Of Character In Jonson’S Sejanus, Jennifer Dawn Jones
Complexity Of Character In Jonson’S Sejanus, Jennifer Dawn Jones
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Critics claim Jonson’s Sejanus, the first of his only two surviving tragedies, lacks the emotional elements of more popular tragedies because Jonson relies on historical sources and simplifies his characters. This study first establishes Jonson’s own unique requirements in tragedy that affect his character development, then it provides textual evidence of complex characters and offers a reading of the play with Rome, or the body politic, as the tragic hero.
Short Fiction By Women In The Victorian Literature Survey, Elisabeth Rose Gruner
Short Fiction By Women In The Victorian Literature Survey, Elisabeth Rose Gruner
English Faculty Publications
The first time I taught a Victorian Literature survey, fresh out of a curriculum integration workshop in graduate school, I taught ten authors: five male and five female. One student evaluation after the course was over complained that despite the promise of “great” Victorian writers, half of those on the syllabus were women. While this did take place in the dark ages of the early nineties, I still find myself, as I design my syllabi, caught in the familiar conundrum as to what to teach, what to cut, and why. In my case, it seems simple: The Victorian period is …

From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn
From Darwin To Dracula: A Study Of Literary Evolution, Erin Alice Lamborn
Theses Digitization Project
Argues that, without the publication of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species," Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" and Oscar Wilde's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" would not have been written with their distinct style and themes, as evolution clashes with degeneration and female power (and the sexuality derived from that power) clashes with the new science. Stoker and Wilde combine the science of the late 19th century with the characters of their imaginations. Natural and sexual selection plays a part in these characters' core development. The mixture of sexuality, science and power in these two novels all combine to formulate what …

Eyes In The Text: Surveying The Ocular Aesthetic In Pat Barker's War Trilogy, James Hammond
Eyes In The Text: Surveying The Ocular Aesthetic In Pat Barker's War Trilogy, James Hammond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1991, British novelist Patricia Barker published Regeneration, the first of three novels that portrayed the exploits of both factual and fictional characters during the darkest days of WWI. Barker's Eye in the Door (1993), followed by The Ghost Road (1995) for which she won the Booker Prize for Fiction, completed the series that explored the effects of combat on the human psyche. What emerges as a dominant feature of Barker's war novels is her depiction of the ocular sense. Reminiscent of Orwellianism, Barker's texts contain a seemingly ubiquitous ocular presence. For example, neurasthenic patients are scrutinized by army psychiatrists, …
Unshap'd Monsters: Political Farce On The London Stage, 1717-1737, Melissa Ann Bloom
Unshap'd Monsters: Political Farce On The London Stage, 1717-1737, Melissa Ann Bloom
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation reexamines the role of John Gay's and Henry Fielding's anti-government satirical farces during the politically contentious 1720s and 1730s in London. Although their plays were and still are considered, variously, burlesques, entertainments, farces, and satires, I call them satirical farce for two reasons. First, contemporaries used the term farce as much to signify political and social stances as dramatic type or function. Those political and social stances are the central focus of this dissertation. Second, I see in this collection of plays—Gay's Three Hours After Marriage (1717) and The Beggar's Opera (1728), Fielding's The Author's Farce (1730), The …
