Students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) often write abstracts for research assignments but may not understand the purpose of an abstract. This paper presents the pilot of a simple guide for writing abstracts which gave student support to two undergraduate Malawian ELL students for their undergraduate research assignment. The two students and the instructor found the handout was helpful for the students to develop technical writing skills for the abstracts.

This action research project is grounded in positive psychology, positive organizational scholarship, relational cultural theory, and relational leadership practices. This paper first determines the benefits which bilingual education offers and then compares transitional, dual-language, and heritage language maintenance programs. After exploring the outcomes, contexts, and practical implications of the various bilingual programs, this paper explores the oversight in most bilingual studies, which assess students’ syntax and semantics while neglecting their understanding of pragmatics and discourse structures (Maxwell-Reid, 2011). Incorporating information from recent studies which question traditional understandings of bilingualism and argue that biliteracy requires more than grammatical and vocabulary instruction, this paper proposes modifications in current research strategies and suggests best practices for transitional, dual-language, and heritage maintenance programs.

This qualitative research project is a grounded theory study of the experiences of five EAL (English as an additional language) academic writing instructors with intercultural rhetoric. Following the academic conversation about contrastive/intercultural rhetoric, this investigation explores narratives of classroom practice in Ontario secondary schools in order to underline L2 writing activities that are sensitive to intercultural rhetoric. Despite the fact that varieties of Aboriginal English are widely used in communication in Aboriginal communities across Australia, the use of Aboriginal English in writing has been limited. A significant genre for Aboriginal writers has been the autobiographical narrative. In most published narratives of this genre, Aboriginal English has not been widely used. This paper describes and discusses an autobiographical narrative composed by Aboriginal author Glenys Collard and published by the Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development in 2011 in which the only medium of narration (except for utterances by non-Aboriginal characters) is Aboriginal English. The acquisition of English prepositions is especially difficult for students learning English as a second language. This paper briefly discusses how prepositions are used in English and a few of the reasons prepositions cause problems for English language learners. It also analyzes the underlying system that governs prepositions and how this system might be represented to English language learners. Finally, it analyzes the current pedagogy and suggests a possible alternative to the status quo.

A decade before his international acclaim for the His Dark Materials fantasy series, Pullman authored The Broken Bridge, a coming-of-age tale featuring Ginny, an Afro-British teenaged girl living in postmodern coastal Wales. The Broken Bridge delves into dilemmas of racial identity, ideologies of language and location, and aspects of non-Western religion that are not often touched upon in young adult literature. Pullman’s deft characterization prevents Ginny from becoming a caricature; instead, he presents the story of a very real sixteen-year-old girl with resentments, fears, and doubts. 「何壽基學校英語動力營」旨在透過創造一個輕鬆有趣的環境讓學生活學活用大部份已在平日課堂上學到的英語，其主要目標爲：

1. 透過各種富趣味性的英語活動，培養學生的自信心及主動學習性，從而推動學生多聽及多說英語。
2. 透過團體活動，讓學生發揮團結精神及促進個人成長，並借助團隊精神改變個人行爲。
3. 透過比賽形式，激發學生的奮鬥心，同時學習「勝不驢、敗不餒」的道理，並透過建立互相扶助及鼓勵的小組文化，讓小組內較弱的組員能跟上進度。
4. 透過讓學生安排自己的起居飲食，訓練獨立性及自律性。
5. 創造一個給長者與學生互動的平台，促進長幼共融。

爲評估「何壽基學校英語動力營」的成效，本屮心推行了一項調查硏究，探討參與此計訓的學生在以下數方面的轉變：英語能力、知識的增進、個人的發展和團體合作。此外，亦包括了學生對這個「動力營」的評價與意見。
