This study explores the shared challenges during the acculturation process of graduate student immigrants pursuing higher education in the United States. 13 graduate student immigrants at the University of San Francisco discuss their experiences of cultural adjustment into U.S. culture. Through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis, this study seeks to understand the acculturation experiences of graduate student immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States. This analysis is based on the individual-level experience examining attitudes and acculturation strategies in the dominant society. This dissertation studies the impacts of China's monetary policy on China's housing market, stock market, and China's economic growth.

The first essay examines macroeconomic determinants of China's housing price by constructing a VAR model. Granger Causality tests, impulse response functions and variance decompositions are used to analyze the impacts of macroeconomic factors on the housing price. 于省吾（1896-1984)，中國著名古文字學家、訓詁學家，著作成果頗豐，其古籍《新證》系列，以古文字及出土器物作為考訂及訓釋的材料，被視為開啟山林之作。當中《尚書新證》是《新證》系列中最早出版的著作，可反映于氏訓詁方法的早期面貌。在乾嘉考據學派的訓詁方法和王國維「二重證據法」的影響下，于氏《尚書新證》對《尚書》今文28篇的字詞、句義多有新見，其訓釋的價值實不容忽視。然而，近人研究于氏《新證》系列，卻沒有以《尚書新證》作研究對象，因此，本文試以《尚書新證》為研究對象，並探討其價值。 論文共分三章。第一章交代《尚書新證》的撰作背景、動機，及其版本、體例。第二章會從《尚書新證》内文及于氏發表的論文，歸納並討論于省吾的《尚書》學觀。第三章為《尚書新證》之内容考述及特色，介紹此書有別於其他《尚書》注釋著作之連類訓釋方法，討論此書運用古文字資料為證及紀錄異文的情況，並分別歸納于氏解釋字義、詞義，以至句義之方法，亦會兼及《尚書新證》的内容特色。最後總結全書，討論《尚書新證》對後世學者的影響，並對此書作出評債。

This study explores how JFL learners take a benefactive stance in Japanese. As Jaffe (2009) observes, stance-taking "plays a complex role with respect to the naturalization of social and linguistic ideologies and the social structures they legitimate." The way in which language is used to take a stance always concerns the social context in which a speaker finds her/himself. In Japanese, benefactive verbs (kureru, ageru, morau and their honorific and humble equivalents) are indispensable stance indicators for showing gratitude or indebtedness. This dissertation is a multi-sited ethnography on the culture of wealth-tech in South Korea. Wealth-tech (chaet'ek'ŭ) refers to techniques of personal finance and moneymaking, including investments in stocks, mutual funds, real estate, and other financial products. It entered the everyday lexicon in the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997, when South Korea witnessed radical economic restructuring and neoliberal social governing. This thesis will consider the question of the intended audience of Jippensha Ikku’s十返舎一九, ōraimono (educational book) Togakushi Zenkō-ji ōrai 戸隠善光寺往来(1822) as preface to an annotated translation completed using free online xylographic editions. Published in the midst of rising literacy rates and a boom in religious pilgrimages, this work would have been popular among women of the late Edo era. Analysis of the ōraimono genre will reveal that this work, was intended as a practical guidebook for Zenkō-ji pilgrimages rather than for use as a classroom textbook. This research examines the gendered image of the Song dynasty (960-1279) Daoist matriarch Sun Bu’er (1119-1182) based on four hagiographies dedicated to her in four different anthologies from the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). Building on Sun’s representation in these hagiographies, previous scholarship argued that Sun Bu’er’s Daoist identity is more significant than her gender identity. However, a close study of these hagiographic narratives reveals that as the only female disciple among the Seven Perfected Sun Bu’er was chronicled differently than the six male disciples, with emphasis on her gender. This paper examines how national narratives of Japanese cuisine collide with the expectations, preferences, and perceptions of American consumers (particularly Northern California). The global economy has benefited the circulation of positive images of Japan managed by the Japanese government, but the commercialization of Japanese cuisine is also at odds with government efforts. In Japan, sushi is often synonymous with nigirizushi: sliced seafood and a daub of wasabi atop vinegared rice.
