CDRH Grant Reports

The current study, “Application of the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery Team’s First- Generation Methods and Software to the Burney Collection of British Newspapers,” is the first test of our approaches—methods and software—to a different newspaper corpus, specifically the 17th and 18 Century Burney Newspapers Collection. This study stands as the first complete attempt at applying Aida’s software and methods to non-Chronicling America newspapers, as a step toward understanding the potential of our approaches across digitized historic newspapers. In taking this step, our goals were (1) to test how well the software and a classifier model developed on Chronicling America …

CDRH Grant Reports

The primary goal of "Extending Intelligent Computational Image Analysis for Archival Discovery" is to investigate the use of image analysis as a methodology for content identification, description, and information retrieval in digital libraries and other digitized collections. Building on work started under a National Endowment for the Humanities' Office of Digital Humanities Start-up Grant, our IMLS project seeks to 1) analyze and verify our previously developed image analysis approach and extend it so that it is newspaper agnostic, type agnostic, and language agnostic; 2) scale and revise the intelligent image analysis approach and determine the ideal balance between precision and …

CDRH Grant Reports

With its Office of Digital Humanities Start-up Grant, the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery (Aida) team set out to further develop image analysis as a methodology for the identification and retrieval of items of relevance within digitized collections of historic materials.1 Specifically, we sought to identify poetic content within historic newspapers, using Chronicling America's newspapers (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/) as our test case. The project activities we undertook—both those completed and those in process—support this goal and align well with the activities proposed in our original funding application and as approved by NEH. To achieve our goal of creating an image processing-based system …

In the third six months of work on "Image Analysis for Archival Discovery," the project team has made progress toward the goals outlined in our report from June 2015. As we reported in June 2015, we realized that our original plan to analyze 7 million pages from Chronicling America was overly ambitious for the grant period, and we revised our goal to complete a thorough case study of our methodology and code for all newspaper images in Chronicling America from the period 1836-1840. Activities undertaken, toward this and other grant goals, from June 2015–December 2015:

In the second six months of work on "Image Analysis for Archival Discovery," the project team has continued making strides toward our goal of analyzing more than 7 million newspaper pages in Chronicling America for poetic content. We have hit a few challenging areas in our research and development work, and our work plan has shifted in some ways from that originally set out in our application, but we have implemented these changes with the fundamental goal of performing the major research outlined in our proposal—exploring image analysis as a methodology for discovery in digitized collections of historic materials via …

CDRH Grant Reports

In the first six months of work on "Image Analysis for Archival Discovery," the project team has made significant strides toward our goal of analyzing more than 7 million newspaper pages in Chronicling America for poetic content. Although we have made some adjustments to our work plan, we remain on task to perform the major research outlined in our proposal. Activities undertaken from June–November 2014:
• Preparation of training set images (completed)
• Processing of initial data sets to extract/derive features from image data (completed)
• Development of algorithms for describing image characteristics (completed, but future iterations/revisions are likely)
• …
