Casual Myths, David Grandouiller Apr 2017

Casual Myths, David Grandouiller

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio is a multi-genre collection of the best or most representative writing during my three years in the Creative Writing minor at Cedarville University. It includes seven pieces of nonfiction, one short story, and five poems. The most consistent link between these pieces across the genres is an imagist aesthetic, an attempt to live up to W. C. Williams’ adage, “No ideas but in things.” Primary themes the collection explores are my relationship with family, with place, and with God.

Dreams And Reality: A Storyteller's Look At Life, Sara K. Bennett Jan 2017

Dreams And Reality: A Storyteller's Look At Life, Sara K. Bennett

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

These pages tour the wanderings of a storyteller's mind and snippets of life in the forms of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry, though not always in that particular order. The topically arranged pieces first delve into the meaning of being a storyteller. This involves having half of one's mind in another place and putting on the mantles of different characters. After finishing with the theme, the collection turns to fiction with a selection of stories and poems. Turning from fiction, the collection touches upon real life pain, struggles, grief, and growing. Each provides snippets of life adding a backdrop to the …

An Alternate Route, Rachael D. Tague Apr 2016

An Alternate Route, Rachael D. Tague

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

An Alternate Route is a collection of short fiction and creative nonfiction from my undergraduate creative writing minor at Cedarville University. It explores stories I have heard, experienced, and imagined—stories worth remembering. “My Boyfriend’s Estranged Grandfather” was published in Cleaver Magazine, and “Rick’s Café: Negril, Jamaica” appeared in The MacGuffin.

A Work In Progress, David Gruber Apr 2016

A Work In Progress, David Gruber

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This is a collection of poetry and nonfiction pieces that I have written while I attended Cedarville University for four years. Each piece of writing originated from my musings and experiences during my college career. I write humor pieces not only to poke fun at things, but also to help understand the world around me and the experiences I have. In no way, do I ever want to think that I have made it as a writer, but that I am always in progress of becoming a better writer and working on my craft. The nonfiction short “Heart” has been …

In Order To Live, Madison E. Grapes Apr 2016

In Order To Live, Madison E. Grapes

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio, In Order to Live, includes some of the poetry and creative nonfiction pieces I wrote as a Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. “Printmaking” was published in the June 2015 edition of Spry, and “Deep Creek Lake” will be published in the summer anthology of Snapping Twig. The collection aims to redeem memory and salvage the sermon from previous experiences. I wrote about fingerprints, worms, grand pianos, the trinity, heartbreak, cancer and so much more to understand why any of it matters, in order to live.

A Former Liar Armed With Truth And Aiming For Greatness, Jonathan Gallardo Apr 2016

A Former Liar Armed With Truth And Aiming For Greatness, Jonathan Gallardo

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio is a collection of my favorite works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that I wrote during my final four semesters at Cedarville University. “Cicadas at Lorelei” has been accepted for publication in The Merrimack Review, and “I Don’t Share My Grandfather’s Love for Mathematics” has been accepted for publication in *82 Review. This collection deals with my discovering the truth about Jonathan Gallardo and using that truth to create art. I present to you A Former Liar Armed with Truth and Aiming for Greatness.

On Navigating Life As A Deceased Lutheran Pastor’S Daughter, Kathy Roberts

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio is a collection of my favorite original pieces of creative nonfiction and poetry which I wrote during my undergraduate studies at Cedarville University. “My Uncle: Handyman Who Never Left” was published in the June 2014 edition of Spittoon, and “Hiking the Grand Tetons. Milking a Cow by Hand.” has been accepted for publication in Creative Nonfiction. This collection expresses pain from my dad’s death and circumstances that followed it, instances of healing, and aspects of life both before and since. I present to you On Navigating Life as a Deceased Lutheran Pastor’s Daughter.

Around An Image, Alexander Macphail-Fausey May 2015

Around An Image, Alexander Macphail-Fausey

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This is a collection of poetry and creative nonfiction from the four years I attended Cedarville. Each of the pieces originated from a specific image and allowed that image to shape the rest of the work. I use the concrete images to engage complicated ideas or situations I have experienced. I use the writing in this collection to better understand the things I have experienced. The nonfiction shorts “Scar Tissue,” “Sunday 26 January 2014,” and “Malibu Beach: Camp Lot 29” have all been published in the Marco Polo Arts Magazine.

There Is An Unformed World In The Sky Of My Heart, Nathanael T. Spanos May 2015

There Is An Unformed World In The Sky Of My Heart, Nathanael T. Spanos

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

“There is an Unformed World in the Sky of My Heart” contains works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. All the pieces were written after my conversion to Christ in December 2012 and before my graduation from Cedarville University in May 2015. Though my spiritually-themed poems are the pulse of this portfolio, the title refers to the fantasy world of Sembercron, which I am discovering and creating through my writing. The title also refers to heaven growing in my heart, or Christ’s image supplanting my own, or God sanctifying me for his purposes. This portfolio observes, explores, and delights in this …

Phosphenes, Mackenzie Brown Jan 2014

Phosphenes, Mackenzie Brown

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio is a collection of my favorite original pieces of fiction and creative nonfiction I wrote during my time as an undergraduate student at Cedarville University. One nonfiction piece I wrote, “Ice Cream Identity,” was published in the Summer/Fall 2013 edition of SNReview. All of my pieces reflect me trying to make sense of different areas of my life, moments I have been through or seen happen to others. My pieces do not have one underlying theme, nor do they connect perfectly together. Rather, it is a collection of instants, a collection of times I have seen moments and …

Adam's Race, And Other Writings, Eric C. Skowronski Jan 2014

Adam's Race, And Other Writings, Eric C. Skowronski

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This collection is the culmination of four years as a Creative Writing minor at Cedarville University. It features four short stories which exemplify my own focus on fiction writing. It also includes an introduction, which gives some personal background behind my creative writing, and a foreword, which discuss my view of my Christian faith as it relates to creative writing, and fiction in particular.

Calling All Spirits, Jesse A. Silk Jan 2014

Calling All Spirits, Jesse A. Silk

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

Calling All Spirits showcases an exploration into the more uncanny aspects of life. In both fiction writing and poetry, this collection essentially wanders into various aspects of the post- Enlightenment societal void and communicates different characters and personas grasping at a more wholesome, organic existence amidst the processed and sometimes degradative confusion of contemporary life. Through offering different perspectives and putting words to multiple concerns, a goal of Calling All Spirits is to prioritize the works over any less important concerns about, for example, how closely a poem’s speaker resembles the author. Allowing a writer to freely voice a concern …

Life, Love, And Lost Smiles, Ashley V. Matthew Jan 2014

Life, Love, And Lost Smiles, Ashley V. Matthew

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This collection is a compilation of poetry, non-fiction and fiction writing. The works in this collection are inspired by many subjects including personal lifetime events, friends, dreams and more. This collection, entitled “Life, Love & Lost Smiles” symbolizes some of the many things that have personally shaped my life and helped me become not only the writer, but the person that I am today.

Crayons And Yarn, Danielle G. Holloway Nov 2013

Crayons And Yarn, Danielle G. Holloway

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poems, creative nonfiction, and short stories, all original pieces of writing produced while completing the Creative Writing Minor at Cedarville University. The poems come from my own life, and while they are not intended to be a cohesive narrative, arranged in this order they tell a story of growing up, leaving home, and finding love. The nonfiction pieces come from a collection centered around my experiences in high school marching band, though a love story is present there as well. The short stories also draw heavily from my own experiences and passions, exploring themes that are important …

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard Nov 2013

This Level Of Living, Rose Havard

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio contains poetry, nonfiction, and one short fiction story. Two nonfiction pieces appearing here, “Welcome to the Armory” and “Survey: Headphones” have also been published in the online journal Prick of the Spindle. All pieces were written between August of 2012 and May 2013. I consider this collection the best of my college writing.

I pay extra attention to sounds in my pieces. I also try to achieve a certain level of ostranenie—a poetry term that means “making the familiar strange”—because I am fascinated with the attempt. This Level of Living refers to a state of high awareness, of …

If I Remember Correctly, Kristin L. Troyer Apr 2013

If I Remember Correctly, Kristin L. Troyer

Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This portfolio includes original fiction, plays, and creative nonfiction, the best of my work as a creative writing minor at Cedarville University. The two fiction pieces experiment with structure, one through a non-linear form and one through non-conventional dialogue. My one-act play attempts to lyrically combine dialogue and poetry. Six pieces of creative nonfiction, the majority of the portfolio, relate stories directly from life, but the entire collection relies on my own memories – which may or may not be accurate.
