Word Into Idea: A Creative Writing Exercise, Stephen Fried

This activity begins from an aleatory technique that creates a list of 104 associatively generated words to provide each participant with a field from which they improvise, first a free-form poem using twenty of the words and then an experimental prose piece that uses all 104 words. The poem is written as a workshop activity and optionally shared in a “poetry slam” segment, following which the prose piece is done as a home assignment. The activity takes 90-120 minutes. A version for synchronous online application is in development.

Samuel Beckett penned novels, short stories, poetry, stage plays, radio plays, and scripts—and he did each in a way that blended genre, challenged the norms of creative writing, and surprised audiences around the globe. His experimental approach to creative writing included the use of absurdism, genre-hybridization, and ergodicism, which led to Beckett fundamentally changing the approach to creative writing. His aesthetics have trickled down through the years and can be seen in contemporary works, including Aimee Bender’s short story collection The Girl in the Flammable Skirt and Mark Z. The purpose of my creative writing is to highlight a group of U.S. citizens still woefully underrepresented in literature proper: the Latinx middle class. I’m keenly interested in exploring Puerto Rican and first- and second-generation Latinx immigrant stories. Even though some of the experiences from these groups have been elegantly visited by writers such as Giannina Braschi, Sandra Cisneros, Junot Diaz, Julia Alvarez, and others, there are nuances to the Latinx middle class experience that are yet to be uncovered. These pages tour the wanderings of a storyteller's mind and snippets of life in the forms of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry, though not always in that particular order. The topically arranged pieces first delve into the meaning of being a storyteller. This involves having half of one's mind in another place and putting on the mantles of different characters. Creative Writing Minor Portfolios

This is a collection of poetry and creative nonfiction from the four years I attended Cedarville. Each of the pieces originated from a specific image and allowed that image to shape the rest of the work. I use the concrete images to engage complicated ideas or situations I have experienced. I use the writing in this collection to better understand the things I have experienced. The nonfiction shorts “Scar Tissue,” “Sunday 26 January 2014,” and “Malibu Beach: Camp Lot 29” have all been published in the Marco Polo Arts Magazine.
