Out Cold, Fred G. Leebron Jul 2010

Out Cold, Fred G. Leebron

English Faculty Publications

Walter had just completed his five-mile route on the treadmill and was headed from the gym to his car in a nearby parking lot - he was in fact circumnavigating a field on which a few idiotic teenagers were kicking a soccer ball at a field hockey goal, so as not to approach near their game - when he was struck in the side and back of his head by something large and forceful and solid and round, and it sent his glasses flying from his face and his bright white tennis cap skittering from his head and it flattened …

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood May 2010

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood

Dissertations

Cryptid is a term from the field of cryptozoology, which ostensibly presents itself as the study of creatures that may or may not exist, such as – but not limited to – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Jersey Devil. The term itself, cryptid, refers to one of these unknown creatures. The novella presented here concerns a half-Native American man and his struggle to know not only his dead parents, but himself and his place in the world. While cryptids play a minor role within the boundaries of the narrative itself, the novella concerns itself more with the ways …

Contact, Brittany Osbourne Jan 2010

Contact, Brittany Osbourne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This fiction novel focuses on the Sankofa philosophy that we as human beings must learn from our past to better understand our current existence and future; however, sometimes we choose to ignore or suppress the past because remembering it may be too hurtful. When we forget what happened yesterday our outlook on today and tomorrow becomes distorted. Contact is a novel that attempts to explore how 'living in the now' alone becomes problematic because the past'if not remembered'will come back to haunt you. The erasure of the line between Diasporic Africans and their African past is the primary theme explored. …

Towards A Literary Criticism: Lowry, Durrell, Dolores, And The Alchemical Balance Between Critical And Creative Writing, Mark Burlingame Jan 2010

Towards A Literary Criticism: Lowry, Durrell, Dolores, And The Alchemical Balance Between Critical And Creative Writing, Mark Burlingame

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

I begin this study with the formalistic essays of Michael Oakeshott and Susan Sontag, observing the precarious position of aesthetics in contemporary literary discourse. Rather than fit the novels Under the Volcano and the Alexandria Quartet into normative Kantian or New Critical frameworks, I follow the course of alchemical allusions in Lowry’s novel and relate them to the troubled theme of modern love in Durrell’s, writing in an experiential, plot-driven manner towards a narrative describing the effects of these texts upon my fiction. After I discuss the traces of Sade in Durrell, the metafictional novelette “Dolor” concludes the project, betraying …

Why Moms Drink, Anne Freeman Jan 2010

Why Moms Drink, Anne Freeman

Theses

The personal narratives and poems contained within this thesis explore one of the most primal and powerful relationships in the human experience, that of a parent and child. As a mother of a young boy, I have found, and continue to find my greatest strength, so1Tow, and inspiration in watching him grow.

The collection as a whole does tell a complete story, although not necessarily a chronological one. It is strongly influenced by the creative nonfiction work of David Sedaris. Like Sedaris, these essays portray everyday family relationships, often in less-than- flattering ways. In a similar style, these essays do …

My Family, My Open, Deborah A. Herzog Jan 2010

My Family, My Open, Deborah A. Herzog

Theses

This collection of poems and non-fiction work focuses on self-reflection and family with all its perfections and imperfections. I believe this collection mirrors the essence of the writer and gives insight to the loved ones who shaped that life. It is a tapestry of emotional revelation derived from introspection and observation of the world.

The author has experienced the joy of reading for over forty years and spent many hours journaling throughout her life. The empty nest syndrome was the catalyst to pursue studies in creative writing. It became a cathartic exploration of life that blossomed into a work that …

Eternal Note Of Sadness, Pyra Intihar Jan 2010

Eternal Note Of Sadness, Pyra Intihar

Theses

This collection of poems and short stories is an attempt to answer what Matthew Arnold calls "the eternal note of sadness." The thesis contains poems, two short stories, and one personal narrative. While each of these can be read with different interpretive slants, I choose here to show how each work in this collection is a response to the eternal note of sadness. The poems and personal narrative in the first part of this collection are concerned with the writer's quest, and l will go into depth discussing each of these poems and the narrative because I think they directly …
