A Word Of Hope, Paul Nisly Oct 1991

A Word Of Hope, Paul Nisly

English Faculty Scholarship

Years ago when I was an undergraduate at a small Christian liberal arts college, I was sitting in our chapel auditorium waiting for the sermon. The chaplain walked to the lectern, opened his Bible, and read for us the familiar parable of the Good Samaritan. He ended the reading from Scripture with these words, "The road from Jerusalem to Jericho runs straight through your dorm room." He paused, and we expected the sermon. Then, after a moment of silence, he dismissed us. What power in few words!

I want to argue that words, though limited are God's gift to us …

Reaching Home : A Novel, Virginia R. Oesterle

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is the coming-of-age story of a twelve-year-old girl who lives in a Florida fishing village in 1968, and is thought to be retarded. On a birthday trip to see dolphins perform at a road side show she learns that they are captives simply because man believes he has the right of dominance over "dumb" animals. This emotionally conquered child develops a feeling of kinship to these dolphins and when, with outside help, she discovers that she is dyslexic, not retarded, it frees her to recognize that errors in thinking may exist at many levels. Her release from the trap …

Feminism, Selfhood & Emily Dickinson, Regina York Feb 1991

Feminism, Selfhood & Emily Dickinson, Regina York

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This paper will draw on the work of leading feminist critics and the works of Dickinson, her biographers, and her critics. No effort is being made to trace the history of feminist criticism; that has been done numerous times by critic after critic. Nor does this paper attempt to provide a concordance to critical thought on Dickinson. That, too, is unnecessary. Rather, this paper looks at the relationship between self-identity in Dickinson's poetry and the fundamental need for such a pronounced sense of identity to serve as the cornerstone of feminist criticism. Dickinson's courage to be female and the implications …

Change And Stasis In Dream Of The Red Chamber, Geoffrey Kain

Publications

“Hung-lou Meng, or Dream of the Red Chamber, stands as China’s greatest contribution to the world’s vast store of prose fiction. The eighteenth-century work, attributed to Cao Xue Qin is remarkable not only for its sheer volume but for the insight it affords into the intricacies of the old Chinese family structure, as well as into the way of life of a wealthy family having connections with the imperial court. Cao Xue Qin provides a detailed, expansive description of events within the two linked, great households of the extended Jia family, introduction hundreds of characters and chronicling the eventual falling …

Feminist Fiction And The Uses Of Memory, Gayle Greene Jan 1991

Feminist Fiction And The Uses Of Memory, Gayle Greene

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

All writers are concerned with memory, since all writing is a remembrance of things past; all writers draw on the past, mine it as a quarry. Memory is especially important to anyone who cares about change, for forgetting dooms us to repetition;and it is of particular importance to feminists.

Marge Piercy's Small Changes: Welcome To The Sexual Revolution, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1991

Marge Piercy's Small Changes: Welcome To The Sexual Revolution, Nancy Topping Bazin

English Faculty Publications

Marge Piercy's novel Small Changes is encyclopedic in its incredibly detailed, all-encompassing feminist analysis of female and male behavior in the late 60's and early 70's. The behavior of the younger generation is compared and contrasted with that of their parents. The overall impression given by the novel is that, despite the very different life-styles of the two generations, very little change has, in fact, occurred. At the end of the novel, sexism prevails and no significant threat to male control of the power structure has developed. From examination of the title, Piercy seems to place her emphasis not upon …
