A Word Of Hope, Paul Nisly
English Faculty Scholarship
Years ago when I was an undergraduate at a small Christian liberal arts college, I was sitting in our chapel auditorium waiting for the sermon. The chaplain walked to the lectern, opened his Bible, and read for us the familiar parable of the Good Samaritan. He ended the reading from Scripture with these words, "The road from Jerusalem to Jericho runs straight through your dorm room." He paused, and we expected the sermon. Then, after a moment of silence, he dismissed us. What power in few words!
I want to argue that words, though limited are God's gift to us …

Inside Or Outside The Whale: George Orwell's Art And Polemic, Richard H. Walker
Masters Theses
This chronological study of the evolution of the works of George Orwell is helpful for the futurist, the citizen awash in groupthink, scholars of standpoint epistemology, of mind and nature, of radical humanism, and others. Feminism, Selfhood & Emily Dickinson, Regina York
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This paper will draw on the work of leading feminist critics and the works of Dickinson, her biographers, and her critics. No effort is being made to trace the history of feminist criticism; that has been done numerous times by critic after critic. Nor does this paper attempt to provide a concordance to critical thought on Dickinson. That, too, is unnecessary. Rather, this paper looks at the relationship between self-identity in Dickinson's poetry and the fundamental need for such a pronounced sense of identity to serve as the cornerstone of feminist criticism. Dickinson's courage to be female and the implications …

Feminist Fiction And The Uses Of Memory, Gayle Greene
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
All writers are concerned with memory, since all writing is a remembrance of things past; all writers draw on the past, mine it as a quarry. Memory is especially important to anyone who cares about change, for forgetting dooms us to repetition;and it is of particular importance to feminists.
