In these memoirist essays I interweave my life stories with sojourns in nature and my spiritual journey. Not a narrative of horrific abuse and trauma , it is an account similar to those of other women growing up the 1950's, a time of pretense that social problems did not exist, that the United states was a place of upward mobility-except if you were black, poor, female or otherwise removed from a life of privilege.

The intended purpose of this thesis it to compose a collection of poetry consisting of four sections with each section containing between four to ten poems. Set over the course of several decades, the stories trace the events that changed individuals, families, and a whole community for decades. The short stories in this collection focus on young individuals’, especially women’s, experience and development as they navigate personal relationships and search for a place in the world. Both longer stories and flash fiction are included, and stories are told in past and present tense, and from first, second, and third person point of view. However, the narration of all of these stories stays close to the characters’ points of view, inhabiting their visceral experience. Eruv is a collection of poems exploring the interstices between the Judaic concept of Eruvin and the poetic traditions of dictation, field and personist poetics. This thesis, comprising an excerpt from my young adult paranormal novel ‘Somewhat Damaged’ and an essay, examines the mythic potential of sleep paralysis, a paralytic transitory state between sleep and consciousness during which frightening hallucinations are projected onto the waking environment. While the neurophysiology is generally agreed upon, further investigation is warranted on the anomalous phenomena that manifests during sleep paralysis hallucinations. Within the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis, particularly Carl Jung’s collective unconscious theory (1959), I will imaginatively explore the recurring figure of the ‘incubus’ of sleep paralysis that has provoked ubiquitous fear and ambiguity.
