Slices Of Life, Julia M. Franks
Slices Of Life, Julia M. Franks
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this collection we explore death, loss, joy, love, and life. “Smiles through tears has always been my favorite emotion.” (Steel Magnolias) And that’s what this is, smiles through tears. Everyone is slightly depressed, there are some happy moments in there. A lot of love, and a lot of friendship. Slices of life, little bite sized nuggets of stories I’ve used to mimic my own life.

Dictation From The Moon, Leland Monson
Dictation From The Moon, Leland Monson
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Much of my poetry concerns twelve-step recovery, brushes with suicide, and other related incidents. With more poetry coming out, there was more recovery and other influences. Some manifested themselves through imitation. Sometimes they came through form. Sometimes inspiration manifested through language. Some came from goodness knows where. An accumulation of all of it, each poem follows one or more of these guiding principles.

Infants Are A Collection Of Cells, Helena M. Blanco
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The poems in this collection represent three main themes within the work. The first theme relates to family and memory; how it changes over time and generation. The second theme focuses on music as influence outside of instruments; how poetic voice is a type of music in its cadence and rhythm. The third theme includes pop-culture’s lasting effect on current society and its nostalgic feel on the millennial population. Each theme embodies the poems messages of universal meanings along with abstract topics including certain groups such as geek culture and heavy metal fans.

“To Be Men, Not Destroyers”: Developing Dabrowskian Personalities In Ezra Pound’S The Cantos And Neil Gaiman’S American Gods, Michelle A. Nicholson
“To Be Men, Not Destroyers”: Developing Dabrowskian Personalities In Ezra Pound’S The Cantos And Neil Gaiman’S American Gods, Michelle A. Nicholson
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Kazimierz Dabrowski’s psychological theory of positive disintegration is a lesser known theory of personality development that offers an alternative critical perspective of literature. It provides a framework for the characterization of postmodern protagonists who move beyond heroic indoctrination to construct their own self-organized, autonomous identities. Ezra Pound’s The Cantos captures the speaker-poet’s extensive process of inner conflict, providing a unique opportunity to track the progress of the hero’s transformation into a personality, or a man. American Gods is a more fully realized portrayal of a character who undergoes the complete paradigmatic collapse of positive disintegration and deliberate self-derived self-revision …

Contact, Christine M. Stevralia
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A year after Alyssa Milano’s tweet launched the #MeToo movement, survivors of sexual assault are being called ‘accusers’ in the media, and public opinion is swinging in favor of guilty men. #MeToo raised awareness but not understanding. What is rape? What is consent? As evidenced by the #MeToo movement and the backlash against it, clearly, as a society, we don’t know. Contact is a work of Creative Nonfiction that uses scenes and details from the narrator’s personal experiences to illuminate the micro-negotiations that occur in sex and seduction.

When Tori Bush’s father died of chemical causes related to Agent Orange, she found herself obsessed with tracing dioxins, one of the main ingredient of Agent Orange in other American communities. She began to visit and interview residents of Mossville, Louisiana, a small town on the border of Texas, which has fourteen petrochemical facilities surrounding the town. The residents also had been exposed to dioxins. Grief and anger connected Tori to this story, but it is far larger—is the right to a healthy natural environment a part of our American citizenship?

The Fool’s journey centers on memory, regaining personal power, admitting and accepting weakness, and creating a personal place in relation to a larger world. This evolution throughout the journey is explored through detailed repeating imagery and symbols drawn from a mixture of traditional tarot imagery and the author’s personal image set created for this narrative.
