Creative Writing In A University Bridging Program For Underprivileged Stem Students, Glen Retief, Yolandi Woest, Nosipho Mthethwa

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Underprivileged and additional-language students struggle to access university-level STEM instruction in English. Yet efforts to bridge academic readiness gaps often founder on ineffective instructional approaches. This study used student questionnaires and writing sample comparisons to investigate the impact of weekly creative writing lessons on students enrolled in a STEM-focused, university bridging program for high school students in the Black working-class township of Mamelodi, South Africa. Our tentative results suggest that creative writing teaching may have a significant role in building confidence, written communication skills, intellectual community, and improved program retention. However, further research is needed.

Contact Zones, Discursive Spaces: The Case Of The Silliman University National Writers Workshop, Alana Leilani C. Narciso Oct 2023

Contact Zones, Discursive Spaces: The Case Of The Silliman University National Writers Workshop, Alana Leilani C. Narciso

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

The Silliman University National Writers Workshop’s (SUNWW) historical circumstance has been implicated in the Cold War. As such it is accused of perpetuating colonial ideas on language and literary production. Its use of New Criticism is said to be detrimental to nation-building as this critical pedagogy is seen to be ahistorical and apolitical. This paper investigates the Workshop space and critiques the actual workshop discussions in the years 2019 and 2021. The explorations reveal that the Workshop is a discursive space, a “contact zone” where its participants are always engaged in the act of negotiating ideas about craft, literature and …

Forgotten Names And Unmarked Graves: A Collection Of Poems By A Nursing Major, Taylor Howse Jan 2023

Forgotten Names And Unmarked Graves: A Collection Of Poems By A Nursing Major, Taylor Howse

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

These poetry pieces are a collection of works from my undergraduate experience as an English minor. "The Sheep in a Wolf's Skin" is a fairytale retelling with a twist. It is a dramatic monologue from the perspective of a villain, who hopefully will make you rethink your favorite childhood stories. "The Forgotten Cinderellas" is a free verse poem written as a twist from a favorite fairytale happily ever after. Finally, "Forgotten Names and Unmarked Graves" is a free verse poem written as a tribute for all the forgotten names that are not taught in history. For Samson Occom and William …
