The Superhero Inside is a research-based, non-fiction novel that connects elements of psychology to the concept of superheroes. There are seven chapters that explore a range of topics, including why we are fascinated by villainous characters and how superheroes represent (or misrepresent) diverse groups of people.

On a campus where women make up a majority of the student population, it is especially important that female voices are heard and given a platform on which they can control their own narrative. I wanted to give those female-identifying voices that platform. I conducted a series of interviews to examine how college-aged female-identifying students feel about their identity and how they construct that identity within the climate of the JMU community. This thesis combines research writing with personal narrative to document and analyze the process of a service learner. I often engage in a literary analysis of my own narrative work to elicit the steps in the evolution of service learning within an individual. As a student of an institution that strives to be the national model of an engaged university, I hope that my work will be of pedagogical use as institutions further develop service learning programs.
