Burroughs's Folios As An Archival Machine For Artistic Creation, Tomasz D. Stompor
Burroughs's Folios As An Archival Machine For Artistic Creation, Tomasz D. Stompor
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Burroughs's Folios as an Archival Machine for Artistic Creation" Tomasz D. Stompor discusses the significance of archival material as a scholarly resource for the analysis of William S. Burroughs's cut-up experiments. Stompor retraces the history of the author's filing system as both a referential repository and a device for documentation and investigates its function as an eperimental machine for the production of cut-up texts and layouts
Gauguin's Savage Document Work: Understanding As Function, Tim Gorichanaz
Gauguin's Savage Document Work: Understanding As Function, Tim Gorichanaz
Proceedings from the Document Academy
We tend to think of documents as things that provide answers, but documents can also provoke questions. This can be seen clearly in the study of art-making as document work, since the power of art is not in how it can represent reality, but how it can pose questions to reality. In this paper, I examine the work of 19th-century artist Paul Gauguin, which proceeded through iterative abstraction and productive reproduction. Gauguin's document work was a mode of questioning with the epistemic and communicative aim of understanding.

Engaging The Community: Reflections On A Steam Institute, Dennis Doyle, Yat-Long Sam Poon
The STEAM Journal
Staff at an elementary school working with artists from a non-profit arts integration professional development organization developed a highly engaging full day STEAM Institute to engage the community in experiential STEAM learning practices and to leverage the experience for systemic impact. This reflection considers the outcomes that went well beyond the original goals.
Gary Brewer - Dark Matter Series, Gary Brewer
Gary Brewer - Dark Matter Series, Gary Brewer
The STEAM Journal
In the Dark Matter series of paintings I am abstracting images from NASA’s efforts to map dark matter using the Hubble Space Telescope. From these abstractions I create diaphanous veils of blue that convey a sense of movement; the movement suggests primal forces: wind, water air and fire.
The figure in the foreground is one of the elements: gold, copper, silver, which develop into a variety of fantastic shapes. The ‘elements’ which are the foundation of life on earth, are born in the heart of a star and explode out into the universe upon its death and collapse. The force …
Cold Hard Facts, Paul Kelley
Cold Hard Facts, Paul Kelley
The STEAM Journal
COLD HARD FACTS is an ephemeral installation composed of a projector, digital images and ice. The work continues my interest in having the viewer slow down to have a more thoughtful and absorptive experience with the work and surrounding space. With a short-lived duration, the piece considers the transitory nature of things and how truths can be misconstrued as facts, whereas truths are malleable and facts are not. They are cold, hard and indifferent.

Many sources date the pit-firing process as a 30,000 plus years-old ceramic firing technique. Every year I take my AP 3D Design class to the beach to fire ceramic pieces using this method. Being a contemporary sculptor who shows in Los Angeles I have always appreciated pit-fired pieces but never used one in my own art practice until now. A connection between the first method of firing ceramics and my art practice seemed unrelated. The title for my piece might add to the disconnect; and yet these seemingly unrelated elements force the work into a place where the artistic process …

Art's Disclosive Dimensions: Reflections On The Work Of Peter London, Aaron Darrisaw
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
When I initially came to this project, I vaguely remembered hearing of Peter London once before – in passing perhaps. Yet I knew nothing really of his art or his work as an educator. Each day I came into work, however, I was met with a series of very interesting correspondences, articles, conference presentations, lecture notes, and more that offered a thoroughgoing vision of art as a personally, socially, and spiritually transformative and enriching enterprise. The collection contained document after document of valuable contributions to the instrumental role that art can and does play in opening up individuals to their …

After Embeddedness: Dreaming Democratic Ecologies Through Arts-Based Inquiry, Barbara Bickel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
My arts-based inquiry practice in recent years has become one of turning to the land as a place of unceded memory and ancestral remembering. Touching into the earth as an art practice has been an act of life restoration, re-attunement and re-balancing. This article is a matrixial arts-based inquiry into edaphology, which enacts what artist educator Peter London refers to as a sacred dialogic relationship with the natural world.

Śāntiniketan And Modern Southeast Asian Art: From Rabindranath Tagore To Bagyi Aung Soe And Beyond, Yin Ker
Śāntiniketan And Modern Southeast Asian Art: From Rabindranath Tagore To Bagyi Aung Soe And Beyond, Yin Ker
Artl@s Bulletin
Through the example of Bagyi Aung Soe, Myanmar’s leader of modern art in the twentieth century, this essay examines the potential of Śāntiniketan’s pentatonic pedagogical program embodying Rabindranath Tagore’s universalist and humanist vision of an autonomous modernity in revitalizing the prevailing unilateral and nation-centric narrative of modern Southeast Asian art. It brings into focus the program’s keystones on the modern, art and the artist, which have been pivotal in discoursing on the Burmese alumnus of the ashram-turned-university, and explores how the same might be applicable to fellow artists in Myanmar and the region.
Just Breathing
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
Once in a while we might think something strange like "how long does it take to inhale all the air in my bedroom?" or "what would it feel like if I travelled with my eyes shut?" As Daisy Zhong discovered, artists Pak Sheung Chuen takes these eccentric ideas seriously and has drawn upon them to build an impressive reputation in the art world.

The Abcs Of Curating
DePaul Magazine
Art exhibitions are merely the final product of months—even years—of hard work on the curator’s part. It’s not just about selecting pretty or evocative pieces of art to show—there’s a delicate art to curating as well. Several DePaul alumni in the profession share their insights on the art of curating.

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Christopher Strople
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we examine experience, identity, and their intersections. Working from an autoethnographic positionality, we investigate the insufficiencies of language and the limitations of any given researcher with an intent to address multiple realities and their respective interpretations of meaning. Autoethnographic narratives with the use of visual, written, and multimedia representations further acknowledge the dilemmas of qualitative researchers when they cannot fully describe subjectivities in research. What is deemed to be valid research is often indicative of a theoretical framework that aggressively seeks to invalidate other perspectives and ways of knowing. Thus, we create research spaces by employing counter-narratives …
Dialectical Tensions Experienced During Pediatric Chronic Illness: Analyzing Art Therapy Conversations From A Relational Dialectics Perspective, Katherine A. Rafferty, Erin Parcell
Dialectical Tensions Experienced During Pediatric Chronic Illness: Analyzing Art Therapy Conversations From A Relational Dialectics Perspective, Katherine A. Rafferty, Erin Parcell
Journal of Clinical Art Therapy
Relational dialectics theory (RDT) provides a framework for understanding the dialectical tensions families experience when talking about pediatric chronic illness. One place where families may express these tensions is during clinical art therapy sessions, where therapists encourage child patients and their family members to use the creative process of art to tell stories while engaged in art making. Subsequently, we studied one clinical art therapy program for families with chronically ill hospitalized children. We examined the naturally occurring conversations during the art making process. Family members’ talk enumerated three primary dialectical tensions describing the pediatric illness experience. Findings and implications …
Sondage Autour De L’Exposition Internationale Pour La Palestine De 1978, Nasser Soumi
Sondage Autour De L’Exposition Internationale Pour La Palestine De 1978, Nasser Soumi
Artl@s Bulletin

Past Disquiet: From Research To Exhibition, Kristine Khouri, Rasha Salti
Artl@s Bulletin
An exhibition of an exceptional scale and scope took place in Beirut in the middle of the civil war and today, its archival and documentary traces have been almost entirely lost. The International Art Exhibition for Palestine opened in the Spring of 1978, comprising some 200 works donated by artists hailing from nearly 30 countries, to be a seed collection for a museum in exile. This is a transcript of a presentation of the transformation of research into an exhibition format and a virtual walkthrough of the show Past Disquiet: Narratives and Ghosts from the International Art Exhibition for Palestine, …

Desirable Difficulties: Toward A Critical Postmodern Arts-Based Practice, Gloria J. Wilson, Sara Scott Shields, Kelly W. Guyotte, Brooke A. Hofsess
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Prior scholarship on collaborative writing projects by women in the academy acknowledges sustained attempts of intraracial and interracial collaboration/divides. Interracial collaborative scholarship, while noble in effort, may result in unacknowledged tensions surrounding racial identity politics. In these collaborative environments the problematics of race cannot be denied, with Black women often drawing upon their racialized identities, while White women emphasize their gendered identities. An unawareness and/or invisibility of Whiteness as a racial construct of privilege further problematizes feminist postmodern discourse. This polyvocal text focuses on responding to and working within the tensions of identity politics encountered in interracial scholarship among four …
