Opal Ong’s paintings and drawings are rooted in but larger than memory. The work is flat and graphic. With this practice, Ong makes do with the living memories that haunt her. This process is not nostalgic or sentimental. Instead, it is a meditation on a kind of loss without resolve.

This writing situates material and gestural vocabularies cultivated in my artwork in relation to my lived experience; primarily my rural upbringing in Colorado. I want to record the breakdown of male systems and the rise of the mother archetype. In my paintings, I show symbols of masculinity being disassembled and retranslated. I embrace the return of the feminine as we move out of the phallic world of industrialism and into something new.
