Before coming to FAU, I developed the undergraduate media arts curriculum at USCB, where I assigned research posters to art students as part of their final project presentations. In this talk, I will describe my approach to integrating practice-based research practices into multimedia courses, and how framing creative work as research can benefit student learning. This STEAM (Art+STEM) approach to multimedia pedagogy tries to balance intuitive exploration of creative expression with critical enquiry into the artistic process. Students begin to understand that artists have always been technical and learn to better articulate what motivated their creative work.

Scholars and students practice literacy, numeracy, and graphicacy in school. In this educational triumvirate, graphicacy remains the less familiar term. Graphicacy is an ability, a fluency in making and reading visualizations and charts. How might scholars working in digital media practice graphic literacy in the shaping and sharing of their work? By working with more awareness of graphic literacy, scholars can also become more inclusive. Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study—drawn from our experiences as collections librarians—examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens

Based on research of the “Children Are Citizens” initiative from Project Zero at Harvard University, the Trash to Treasure project will engage and capacitate our preschoolers and lower elementary students to be agents of change in our local community. This interdisciplinary project will bring attention to an important environmental issue within our community. Plastic pollution will be transformed into an interactive exhibit and lead our students from bystanders to advocates. Community-wide beach clean-ups will provide students with the trash to create an original multi-media piece that incorporates movement to engage and communicate our message. As today’s youth blossom into adulthood, they will simultaneously be challenged to develop their sense of self/identity and to cultivate their ability to embrace differences, all while being bombarded by visual media and messaging. Research literature on perspective taking provides a framework by which students can develop an understanding of their own perspective, imagine the world from an “other” perspective, and make connections that link to productive actions (Selman, 1971). Perspective taking as a concept has been linked to greater empathy, compassion, and prosocial behavior (Hardwood and Farrar, 2006). During adolescence, youth start to look outside of their spheres of family to explore the greater world and they are often left with visual media as the go-to source of information. Media images are contrived to provoke meaning through the use of signs and how they are presented and they manipulate images to impart messages. The project is a major part of the travel course in Japan that I have taught with Lesley Art + Design (LA+D) colleagues in Animation, Illustration and Design. The project examines how past and current students of liberal arts and arts and design have made associations across disciplines as well as to explore what new knowledge this cross-disciplinary collaboration can bring to each field.

The Forgotten : Child Soldiers, Sam Fee

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Child soldiers have been slowly forgotten about by the public over the last century. There are only a few groups of people are trying to fight for these children. As a visual artist, I created a painting, my work entitled Invisible Children utilizes acrylic and wildfire blacklight paint to symbolize the underreported presence of children in global conflict, the hidden image represents the light we need to shine on these issues.
