Poetry & Prints: Impressions From Detroit & Brazil, Marion Jackson Ph.D., Thomas L. Pyrzewski
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
This panel presentation will discuss how one good idea developed into the blueprint for a high-quality arts program for Detroit area youth that can be used year after year.
Eight Detroit arts organizations are collaborating to offer a 9-week summer program of workshops presenting high-quality instruction in visual arts and poetry for Detroit youth – introducing students to a variety of media and techniques, focusing particularly on poetry, screen printing, and letterpress printing. As part of the summer program, students will learn about a fascinating artistic tradition of the Northeast of Brazil known as literatura de cordel (“stories on a …

Between Paper And Porcelain, Alternative Printmaking Techniques, Thomas Lucas
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
As contemporary printmakers continue to push the boundaries of the printmaking medium across the disciplines, the role of the print has proved an important creative element with mediums such as ceramics. This demonstration will showcase traditional printmaking techniques such as etching and lithography transfer applications to porcelain clay. The ceramics community has been aware of printmaking techniques such as screenprinting and monoprinting for many years. These approaches have opened up, the possibilities for applying images on the surfaces of ceramic vessels and sculptural forms. As well as, supporting a more interdisciplinary perspective towards the arts in general.
The idea of …

“Recreating The Tinted Lithograph Using Stones And Photo-Plates”, Beauvais Lyons
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
This technical demonstration will present a simple and direct approach to combining stone and plate lithography to recreate tinted lithographs common to the first half of the 19th century. My approach is an adaptation of methods described in Michael Twyman’s book The Techniques of Drawing on Stone in England and France and Their Application to Works of Typography (Oxford University Press, 1970). The tinted lithograph uses the same principles as the chiaroscuro woodcut, but is capable of achieving a significantly broad range of tones. It is also a very good method to introduce the principles of color lithography to …
Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins
Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
This panel will explore the link between today’s small press movement and the formal aspects of commercial printing during the American 20th century. Panelists include Christine Medley , Philip Gattuso, and Nancy Bernardo.
Using as its primary example letterhead from defunct companies in Detroit, and secondarily, specimens of business and legal letterhead from other urban centers of the industrial United States, this panel will examine and discuss: What did letterhead represent to 20th century printers in local markets such as Detroit? What is the significance of printed letterhead, and stationery, to the art of small press printing in post-industrial cities …
Finding Printmaking’S Place In A Interdisciplinary And Post-Digital World, Jonathan M. Mcfadden, David Wischer
Finding Printmaking’S Place In A Interdisciplinary And Post-Digital World, Jonathan M. Mcfadden, David Wischer
The Mid-America Print Council Conference
Over the past decade there has been an ever-increasing number of digital and post-digital processes being introduced into the studio. Post-digital refers to media that has emerged in the field after the acceptance of digital processes (inkjet printing, digital photography and video, etc.) which, includes the incorporation of Computer Numeric Control (CNC) routers, laser etchers, water-jets, rapid prototyping software, vinyl cutters, drawing machines, and most recently 3-D printing capabilities. As with most new technology over time, the equipment becomes more affordable and use of the technology becomes more accessible to the artist and institution.
At the same time post digital …

Designing Affiliative Objects: Investigating The Affiliations Of Medical Identification Jewellery, Alexandra Haagaard, William Leeming
Designing Affiliative Objects: Investigating The Affiliations Of Medical Identification Jewellery, Alexandra Haagaard, William Leeming
DRS Biennial Conference Series
affiliation of medical identification jewellery with paramedics as the central user group. In doing so, we use Suchman’s notion of the affiliative object to reframe medical identification jewellery as a compound epistemic object with affiliations to paramedics in the province of Ontario, Canada. The paper begins by providing background including the methods used to assess the use of medical identification jewellery. There follows a section on how the findings from fieldwork were used to develop a first iteration of design recommendations. A compliancy table then appends discussion of key findings and design recommendations. Three design concepts were found to be …

Using Augmented Reality As A Discovery Tool, Jolanda-Pieta Van Arnhem, Jerry M. Spiller
Charleston Library Conference
Layar is an augmented reality (AR) platform that enables creators to tie online resources to physical objects or locations via mobile technologies. The authors detail their exploration of Layar’s geolocation and interactive print abilities to aid the discovery of various resources in and around the College of Charleston campus pertaining to revered local artists William Halsey and Corrie McCallum. They explore opportunities for the added value of contextually situated information linking to vetted library and museum holdings. They detail some of the technical and technological requirements involved with coding and multimedia creation for AR, including the successes and pitfalls revealed …

The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman
The Artist And The Rebel: The Art Of Graffiti And Its Impact On Memory Architecture, Stephen A. Setman
Celebration
The lasting presence of graffiti in major cities like Berlin raises the question, what kind of perspective does such an art form have on memory? Given that graffiti are written or painted on structures and buildings, which are already their own kind of monument, and that the content of graffiti tends towards the politically and socially critical, how are we to understand the relationship of these works to places of memory creation? Why, for example, do we sometimes give monumental protection (Denkmanlschutz) to works of graffiti, and why so often not? My research investigates the roll of graffiti in cultural …

The Design Of A Mobile, Animatronic Bald Eagle, Eric Burns
The Design Of A Mobile, Animatronic Bald Eagle, Eric Burns
Phi Kappa Phi Research Symposium (2012-2016)
Modern animatronics are used as a tool to help engage audiences in realistic and entertaining experiences. Many animatronic figures are dynamic in movement, but static in mobility. The research presented covers the beginnings of mobile animatronic research. An animatronic bald eagle, Opportunity, was designed for that purpose. Animations for Opportunity are generated by integration of Arduino, Pololu Mini Maestro, and Hitec Servo Motors. Arduino receives signals from flex sensors which cause voltage variations when “flexed”. The 1:1 scale, animatronic eagle can be perched on the arm of an “actor” who simulates an eagle’s caretaker. The flex sensors are located within …

"Synthesizing Cubism And Surrealism: Wifredo Lam's 1940s Cuban Works", Kelsey Winiarsky
"Synthesizing Cubism And Surrealism: Wifredo Lam's 1940s Cuban Works", Kelsey Winiarsky
Africana Studies Student Research Conference
As a modernist artist, Wifredo Lam used issues of racial degradation and colonialism as a catalyst to create work that directly addressed issues of colonialism in Cuba. Akin to Picasso’s process of appropriating of African motifs within a modern, Cubist style, Wifredo Lam created and appropriated a pastiche of both Surrealistic and Cubist styles into his 1940s paintings. The utilization of these modern styles engendered Lam’s international reputation while providing him with a powerful, creative outlet to express his struggle as an Afro-Cuban. Through the use of African masks and the Santería religion in his paintings during this time period, …
P-21 Teaching Strategy: Explaining The History And Themes Of Abstract Expressionism To High School Students Through The Integrative Model, Kirk Maynard
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
The purpose of my thesis is to create a blueprint for teachers to explain art history to students in an efficient way without many blueprints and precedence to guide them. I have chosen to focus my topic on Abstract Expressionism and the model that I will be using to present the concept of Abstract Expressionism will be the integrated model instructional strategy. This integrated model will serve as the guide to creating well crafted art history lessons in the classroom. This integrated model will also be laid out and summarized in a lesson plan designed to give the teacher direction …
P-20 Isolation And Disconnection, Lynda Lee
P-20 Isolation And Disconnection, Lynda Lee
Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs
As one of the most recurrent subjects of visual art, the human form has been an important means of communicating human experiences and expressing the philosophical and scientific thoughts of a society. During the early 20th century, artists in Europe began distorting and abstracting the human figure in ways that were unprecedented and often times visually unsettling to emphasize its withdrawn and isolated condition while also suggesting a sense of fragility and vulnerability. Although there are various forms of isolation that can result from a number of different causes, this project explores the concept of social isolation brought about by …
