Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney
Skin Deep: Analyzing Black Representation In The Teaching Of Visual Arts, Destiny Arianna Kearney
Honors Projects
My honors thesis argues that at Bowdoin College, failure to provide Culturally Relevant Teaching in art studio courses dismisses the representation of Blackness in the Visual Arts Department. Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) recognizes the importance of all students' cultural experiences in different aspects of learning. It allows for equitable access to education for students of diverse backgrounds. CRT is crucial to reconstructing Art Education to represent diverse student bodies. My position as a Black-Indigenous artist enables me to reflect on the intersection of these frameworks and to build upon them in order to highlight the need for pedagogical practice in …
Chemistry In Art: The Science Of Dye, Madeleine Gray Burland
Chemistry In Art: The Science Of Dye, Madeleine Gray Burland
Honors Projects
Fabric arts, and the practice of dyeing fabric using various resist techniques, is a tradition that goes back centuries, and is unique among art mediums in its relation to science, as the innovations in dye production have directly affected the art form. The development of synthetic dyes in the 1800’s greatly affected the way fabric is dyed, and subsequently the way clothes were made and consumed. As opposed to dyes made of natural materials, synthetic dyes cam in more colors, were brighter, easier to make in large quantities, and lasted longer since they didn’t fade with repeated washings. The practice …

Lesson Plans Integrating Art With Steam: Providing Students With Universal Education Experience, Karolyn L. Turner
Theses and Dissertations
With funding being cut in public schools, many students are no longer being exposed to the arts. Studies have shown that integrating art with math and science leads to a more successful student. As an alternative to classroom instruction, museum education can be used to not only develop art skills, but can also assimilate those skills into math, science, and engineering. As an intern at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia, I developed lesson plans for teachers to use in the classroom. Alternatively, students may come to the museum to participate in the activities. The lesson plans will be presented …
The Language Of Art: A Conversation Between Henri Matisse And Pablo Picasso, Marisa Jones Hooser
The Language Of Art: A Conversation Between Henri Matisse And Pablo Picasso, Marisa Jones Hooser
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study focuses on the dialog between Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso and lays a unique groundwork for instructors in Discipline-Based art education (DBAE). Using two artists, rather than one, it reveals the importance of the basic art elements in a comparative analysis and stylistic variation of both. The art of Matisse and Picasso was intertwined even before their first meeting as it continued to be even after Matisse’s death. It is popular belief that Matisse and his work influenced Picasso’s career, but surprisingly little attention has focused on the influence of Picasso on Matisse’s work or, more specifically, on …

Graduate Student Research Papers
It was the purpose of this study to (1) determine the process that is necessary for dye formation in a colored negative; (2) to investigate the process of .making a color print; (3) to evaluate a color print in regard to density and color balance; and (4) to enable one to correct the color balance of a colored print.
