Anarchist Strategy And Visual Rhetoric In Brazil, 1970: The Living Theatre As “The People In The Street”, Chelsea R. Roberts

The dominant narrative of the Living Theatre, an anarchist-pacifist, activist performance group, situates the company within a historical framework of the "New Left". Implications of this strategy are identified and critiqued. Both due to the simplification of historical time periods between the fields of theatre and politics, or "periodization" (Postlewait), and because of the ways in which the "New Left" is identified as overtly American in much theatre scholarship, historicizing the Living Theatre as "in-line" with the New Left has resulted in the erasure of the Living Theatre's founding philosophies of anarchism and pacifism. This study deals with the printmaking technique of embossing to create visual effects with "non-associative" forms. The prints presented deal with the realm of space and an atmosphere unrelated to our present environment or concepts of gravity. Several visual conflicts were achieved by overlapping objects, creating textured surfaces, and varying thickness, size, location, and shape of forms. Serigraphy, spray paint, flocking, and reflective beads were introduced in some of the prints presented in order to enhance the effect of embossing.

Plactic is the material I chose to communicate my ideas. Named for its ability to be shaped, melted, bent, moulded, and extruded into an infinite number of forms, is one of two reasons I used it. The other is its concept is familiar to modern man and even a definition of him.

To make the communication bridge complete the stulptures are constructed to allow the viewer to take part in the final form. By moving the work, he is as involved in the concept, form, and material as I have been in making the piece.

This thesis presents a series of original jewelry and hand-held art objects which aesthetically relate to each other in a controlled gallery environment. The form of the objects is based on box-shapes, while the content comments on and pokes fun at our present society. This paper presents a series of ideas underlying the philosophy behind the creation of the author's works. The paper deals with the creator-viewer relationship, and the distinction that is commonly accepted as existing between the perception of the two, ascribing more value on the perception of one over that of the other. The conclusions were reached after acute observation of occurrences of everyday as a source of esthetic experience and after lengthy discussions with people involved in the creative process.

This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. The three forms of printmaking used are intaglio, collagraph, and woodcut. A specific theme was not chosen for these prints. Since printmaking has been such a relatively new experience of expression for me, I chose to concentrate this study on the printmaking process.
