Background: Annika is a graphic designer from Hanover, PA. She is studying Visual Communication Design at Jefferson (Class of 2025) and works as a student researcher for Professor Renee Walker. She is the President for Jefferson’s AIGA Professional Association for Design chapter. Annika is also a research assistant for Dr. Radika Bhaskar with a focus on information visualization about bioplastics for educational outreach. Annika's research interest explores the intersections between user experience, accessibility, environmentalism, and urban design.

The map of a university is an essential tool for students, not only for navigation but also to promote the campus. When the map is outdated, students don’t find it functional and it can not complete its purpose. With the map of Pace University’s downtown campus, a new design was needed to go with the renovations that are taking place. When redesigning the map, features that are seen amongst the most common maps should be considered in the design. One feature that most maps now have is some sort of interactivity. The masters project presents findings from recent work the author completed related to wayfinding, and wayfinding systems. This work began as part of a graduate urban design studio, followed by work as a research assistant at the UMass Design Center in Springfield, on a new “demonstration” wayfinding system installed in Springfield, Massachusetts. The wayfinding project was done in association with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission and the Springfield Office of Planning and Community Development, was implemented with the main goals of improving public health by encouraging more people to walk.
