‘The Bauhaus And The Business Of Window Display—Moholy-Nagy’S Endeavours At Window Display In London,’, Kerry Meakin

Academic Articles

This article reassesses the window displays created at Simpson’s, Piccadilly, from April 1936 until early 1937 by the Bauhaus master, László Moholy-Nagy. Although art historian and biographer, Krisztina Passuth, gave Moholy-Nagy the credit for bringing new display methods to Britain, my research reveals that modern methods of display were practised well before his arrival. His designs appear removed from the professional standard of British window display, which was influenced by the fundamentals taught at the Schule Reimann in Berlin during the 1920s. To understand the discrepancy between the German influence on British display and the work of an émigré Bauhaus …

Designing A Module In Entrepreneurship For Product Design Students, Pj White, Con Kennnedy Apr 2021

Designing A Module In Entrepreneurship For Product Design Students, Pj White, Con Kennnedy

Academic Articles

Creative problem-solving has been identified as one of the most critical future-proof skillsets we can develop in our society. When educating future designers, entrepreneurship skills are now considered essential; however, designers find it difficult to establish themselves as entrepreneurs. Therefore, graduate designers are increasingly in need of these skills to complement their creative ability. This paper offers information to academic institutions looking to implement entrepreneurship modules in existing design and creative programmes. The paper seeks to understand the entrepreneurship skills required for product design graduates through a case study. Current teaching practice is described, and interviews and co-design sessions with …

Women In British Window Display During The 1920s And 1930s, Kerry Meakin Jan 2021

Women In British Window Display During The 1920s And 1930s, Kerry Meakin

Academic Articles

This paper examines the role of women in window display in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. Window display in 1920s Britain was very much men’s work. Even when women were encouraged by those outside the profession, they were not necessarily encouraged by those within it. In 1923 the daily press and women’s journals devoted space to the debate on window dressing as an ideal and suitable profession for women. However, the editorial of Display, the official organ of the British Association of Display Men, disagreed. Display believed that women were unsuccessful at window dressing, justified by claiming they …

James Joyce: I. Am. A. Discover Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.

James Joyce (Ulysses,p.31).

In Ulysses, on the morning of the 16th June 1904, Stephen Dedalus is striding on Sandymount strand, thinking about time and place as he moves. Later in the day, Leopold Bloom writes I. AM. A.with a stick in the sand on the same Sandymount strand. His scrubbed words will wash away with the tide but remain forever in the novel.

Using geotracking, I recreated the same ephemeral I. AM. …

Rté Brainstorm: How Do You Create A Pageant For The St Patrick's Day Parade?, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

In 2016 and 2017, DIT created pageant pieces for the St Patrick’s Festival parade in Dublin. In the Dublin School of Creative Arts in DIT we designed and fabricated the pageant pieces and, together with students and staff from all across DIT, we performed in the parade. We moved over a hundred people through the city in front of up to 500,000 people, live, with no full-dress rehearsal, never having done it before.

This article from the RTÉ Brainstorm series describes how we did it.

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan Feb 2016

James Joyce's Model Dublin, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

“You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space.” (Joyce,1986, p.31).

James Joyce wrote about Dublin from a position of exile. He created a model Dublin, one in which he mixed people and places, events and activities, real and imagined and combined them into a city that suited his own ends.

This imagined city has been examined remotely in a multiplicity of ways, and by people in a way that the real city has not. One can ask whether it is Dublin at all? …

1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle Dec 2015

1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle

Academic Articles

Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event …

Discover Joyce's Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

James Joyce told his friend Frank Budgen. “‘I want’ said Joyce, as we were walking down the Universitätstrasse, ‘to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.’” (Budgen, 1960, p.67, 68).

This research looks at the relevance of Dublin to Joyce’s writings and to the relevance of Joyce’s writings to Dublin. It is concerned with the virtual Dublin of Joyce’s writings, the physical manifestation of Dublin over time, and the relationships between them.

Numerous scholars read and analyse the writings of Joyce …

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh

Academic Articles

This article looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. It examines the history of the open-plan office, looking at how the open-plan workplace has evolved. It reports the findings of a survey on office design of 150 office workers across multiple industry sectors, job types and age categories. Finally, assuming there will not be a return en masse to the traditional, space hungry, cellular office for most knowledge workers this article considers what have we learned so far, and how spaces can be designed to support different work-modes, …

The Importance of Sporting Imagery in Representing National Identity

By Siobhán Doyle

Paper Abstract

The Irish landscape- the landscape of the West of Ireland in particular- became synonymous with what it is to be Irish and this association remains today. However another dimension in visual representations of Ireland has emerged- sporting imagery. Images of the Irish rugby team lifting the Six Nations Trophy, Irish soccer team reaching the quarter finals of the World Cup and the global expansion of Gaelic Games paired with the proliferation of successful sporting individuals such as Katie Taylor, Sonia O’ Sullivan, Rory McIlroy and Conor …

Sustainable Graphic Design In Ireland - Identifying And Overcoming Obstacles And Misconceptions In Practice, Lisa Zimmermann Jan 2015

Sustainable Graphic Design In Ireland - Identifying And Overcoming Obstacles And Misconceptions In Practice, Lisa Zimmermann

Academic Articles

This is an analysis of environmental ethics in current graphic design practice in Ireland. It investigates the most common obstacles, challenges and misconceptions that are presently being cited by Irish designers for not practising sustainably.

A mixed method approach of a survey and a series of semi-structured interviews, accompanied by a small scale case study of a best practice design studio led to the result that designers in Ireland are very interested in sustainability but certain obstacles hinder them from implementing sustainable solutions in their work practice. Recommendations are made based on the findings for methods to be explored that …

E-Portfolios In The Design Curriculum: Enhancing The Practical Dimensions Of The Design Studio Class, Órla Keane

Academic Articles

The Design Studio Environment

The subject of Interior design is a problem-solving methodology, whether it is enhancing the way a building’s space is used, or designing a piece of furniture based on the anthropometrics of the human form. The Technological University Dublin’s BA Interior Design studio class is where these types of problems are generally worked through and solved, with the support of lecturers and peers. The studio class is also where major long-term design projects are designed, created, visualized, and critiqued.

In addition to equipping students with the appropriate skills and ability to develop a creative approach to solving …

Virtual Teaching, John O'Connor

Academic Articles

The potential of online virtual environments, such as Second Life for delivering remote learning continues to be debated by academics. It would appear to offer particular opportunities to support remote learning in art & design, where there is a particular requirement for live visual interaction. The School of Art, Design & Printing at the Technological University Dublin (DIT) received funding to develop a module for undergraduate students to test this theory. A five-credit module (under the European Credit Transfer System) received formal approval from the Institute in 2008 and was delivered as a pilot to academic staff interested in exploring …

Academic Articles

In 1998 Technological University Dublin formed a partnership with the Sherkin Island Development Society to deliver a pilot programme in Art and Culture on an offshore island in the Atlantic. Developed around the needs of the local community the programme utilised a combination of live and remote teaching methods built around a series of intense workshops. The paper traces the genesis of the project and addresses three main questions: what it cost; what resources were required; and how it might be sustained. The pilot ran from October 2000 to May 2001and was so successful that a second offering has commenced …
