Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer May 2015

Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer

Nikolai B Eiteneer

Tom Stoppard’s tragicomedy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1964), earned the early popularity and the world-wide reputation that such a work deserved, booting Tom Stoppard into the limelight as an up-and-coming young writer. The play itself verges on an absurdist style, but due to the realistic nature of the title characters, the audience members find themselves sympathizing with their plight and lack of knowledge though any theatre goer acquainted with the works of Shakespeare, and Hamlet in particular, will know the final outcome of the play. For those not endowed with such knowledge, however, Stoppard gave the end away. Rosencrantz …

The General Model Of Creative Strategy In Architectural Design, Farhad Shariatrad, Hamid Nadimi

Farhad Shariatrad

Studying behaviour and thoughts of expert designers is regarded as one of the most important areas in design research, and applying the results of it could have effective implication for design education. In one of these researches the creative approaches applied by three professional designers...

Bringing The University Into The Rural Community, The Value And Dangers Of Taking Design Education Out Of The Classroom, B. Canniffe, D. Adams, B. Wiley Mar 2013

Bringing The University Into The Rural Community, The Value And Dangers Of Taking Design Education Out Of The Classroom, B. Canniffe, D. Adams, B. Wiley

Brian M. Wiley

Art and design education prepares students for careers that increasingly don't exist, and further compounds this issue by purveying the myth that these supposed opportunities exist in major cities where jobs are scarce and cost-of-living is overwhelming. While there are many potential reasons for this, the end result is that students, already saddled with an increased debt-load, are progressively destined to fail.

During the summer of 2012, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) in partnership with the Bush Foundation engaged with two rural communities in the Western and Northern areas of Minnesota, USA, to develop meaningful partnerships that …

Responsive Web Design For Libraries: Beyond The Mobile Web, Matthew Reidsma Feb 2013

Responsive Web Design For Libraries: Beyond The Mobile Web, Matthew Reidsma

Matthew Reidsma

A responsive website adapts to each users' device, changing its presentation through fluid grids, scalable images, and CSS3 media queries. I give an introduction to responsive design, and then walk through converting the Grand Valley State University Libraries website to be responsive, so that looks great on every device and eliminates the need to maintain separate websites for "desktop" and "mobile" devices, while offering equal access to all.

Your Library Website Stinks And It's Your Fault, Matthew Reidsma Oct 2012

Your Library Website Stinks And It's Your Fault, Matthew Reidsma

Matthew Reidsma

Library websites stink. They are difficult to use and create tension between us and our patrons. This is a talk about library websites, but it's really a talk about people. It's a talk about our library patrons, a talk about us, what's wrong with the way we're doing things, how and who it hurts, and what we can do about it.

Best Source For Patent Drawing Rules & Regulations, Bernadette Marshall Sep 2012

Best Source For Patent Drawing Rules & Regulations, Bernadette Marshall

Bernadette Marshall

It is with great pleasure that I announce something new from NBG-Drafting and Design. This is our first Newsletter - Special Edition; In this edition we will cover our preferred sources for patent drawing rules & regulations. Finding resources for information regarding patent drawing rules can be frustrating. Much of the information refers to out-of-date methods, like hand drawings using ink pens on board. It is hard to imaging creating any type of mechanical/technical drawings today without the use of CADD (software application for computer aided design and drafting). Most skilled patent draftspersons today are practicing in CADD.

How Can We Nurture And Develop Creativity In First Year Design Students?, Kerry Meakin Jul 2012

How Can We Nurture And Develop Creativity In First Year Design Students?, Kerry Meakin

Kerry Meakin

This research paper investigates the perceptions of first year third level design students in regards to their creative thinking and use of creative strategies, while studying a first year design based curriculum in an Institute of Technology in Dublin. The research aimed to question students in a three-phase, sequential project. The first phase, questioned twenty seven students by issuing anonymous questionnaires to gather data on their methods of incubating design ideas, if they experienced any levels of anxiety when doing so, and their satisfaction levels in their design and creative abilities. Literature was reviewed to discover the attributes of those …

Environmental Design And Emerging Technologies: Today And The Near Future, Joseph S. Clark, Lindsay Tan Mar 2010

Environmental Design And Emerging Technologies: Today And The Near Future, Joseph S. Clark, Lindsay Tan

Joseph S Clark

Technological advances over the past 10 years have caused some significant changes to the design of the built environment. These developments, and others like them, promise to change more than just how we design; they will very likely change what we design as well. The authors will present the connection between these developments in a way that projects, realistically, how technology will affect, and are employed by, the design professions in the next five to ten years. Further, the authors will address the promises and pitfalls of embracing virtual environments as the domain of environmental design.

A User-Centred Approach To Effective Wayfinding Map Design : Integrating Theory, Practice And User Participation. (Dissertation), Christopher Kueh Dec 2005

A User-Centred Approach To Effective Wayfinding Map Design : Integrating Theory, Practice And User Participation. (Dissertation), Christopher Kueh

Christopher Kueh

This thesis develops a unified theoretical framework for the design of effective wayfinding maps for city and town environments. The framework is based on user-centred approaches. It integrates theories and perspectives from the disciplines of cartography, architecture, cognitive science, graphic/information/communication design, via constructivism and cybernetics. Disciplines such as cartography, geography, cognitive science, and spatial visualisation technology are conceptualising theories and developing new methods of visualising the built environment, while graphic designers, information designers, communication designers, and individual business (such as shop owners and hotels) are the major producers of current wayfinding maps. Theoretical concerns from the academic disciplines are not …

Spanish And Mamluk Carpets: Comparisons Of Decoration And Structure, Carol Bier Jan 2004

Spanish And Mamluk Carpets: Comparisons Of Decoration And Structure, Carol Bier

Carol Bier

Two recent exhibitions, Carpets of Andalusia and Mamluk Rugs from Egypt, at The Textile Museum afforded a rare opportunity to compare two radically different rug-weaving traditions from the perspectives of design and weave structure. While not often evident to the casual viewer, there is a significant relationship between design, pattern, and weave structure in all Oriental carpets. The opportunity to explore such differences warrants careful examination and critical viewing. The Mamluk rugs all probably date from the last quarter of the 15th century. They comprise a cohesive group defined by color, a geometric style, and similarity of weave characteristics.
