Learn the Terms is a graphic art/academic library collaborative project in which students create touchpoints that illustrate the meanings of information literacy terms used in libraries, library instruction, and college course and course materials. Designed by students in a senior-level graphic design course, the campaign began as the result of a large-scale assessment of students’ understanding of library research terminology that showed a large percentage of university students don’t understand common research and information terms used by professors and librarians.

Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

About Dams Time: Preserving And Integrating Conversation Photography At The Indianapolis Museum Of Art, Rebecca Pattillo

The Clowes Collection of Old Master Paintings housed at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) includes seventy-eight works by Flemish, Spanish, English, Dutch, and Italian masters, comprising some of the museum’s most important artworks. The IMA has recently embarked on an interdepartmental project to create a new digital catalog that will highlight the history of each piece. What makes this publication unique is an emphasis on the conservation history as documented in thousands of images, including X-ray, infrared, and UV photographs. Warning! This Program Contains Graphic Content: Facilitating Understanding Of Library Terms Through Visual Rhetoric, Gayle Schaub, Vinicius Lima

Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.

Geppō 月報, journal‐like pamphlets issued within monographic sets, are important resources containing material that complements the volumes with which they are issued.1 Typical contents for geppō include: brief academic articles, chronologies, bibliographies, reminiscences‐as‐biographies, editorial notes, biographical sketches of contributors to the series, errata and corrigenda, tables of contents, indexes, and information about other volumes in the series. Despite their wealth of contents—much of which can be found only in these publications—geppō traditionally have been overlooked and underappreciated. A responsive website adapts to each users' device, changing its presentation through fluid grids, scalable images, and CSS3 media queries. I give an introduction to responsive design, and then walk through converting the Grand Valley State University Libraries website to be responsive, so that looks great on every device and eliminates the need to maintain separate websites for "desktop" and "mobile" devices, while offering equal access to all.

At the University of the Pacific Library, a work of art is being used to raise the visibility of one of its unique special collections. A photographic mural in the library’s study commons offers an artistic tribute to the naturalist John Muir, whose papers are housed in the library’s Holt-Atherton Special Collections department. The series of events that led to its installation provided unique opportunities to forge partnerships between the library and a variety of people and units within the campus community. Many information technology educators have worked in recent years to develop courses to attract students to the field. As faculty achieve success with technical courses designed to be appeal to a broad audience, it can be hard to maintain the initial excitement particularly as multiple sections of the courses are taught on a continuing basis. In this article we describe a project that added peer evaluation to an assessment in a game design course with a large non-major audience. While controversial, peer evaluation has shown some promise in motivating students to work harder and in improving certain key skills. Consistent …

As a part of an NSF-funded project to enhance computational thinking in undergraduate general education courses, activities and assessments were developed for a game design course taught at DePaul University. The focus of the course is on game analysis and design, but the course textbook uses an approach that is heavily grounded in computational thinking principles. We describe the course activities and assignments and discuss an initial assessment of those materials. Our results show that there is a gap in difficulty between several of the activities and indicate that the materials developed help students to better learn the computational thinking …

A Hybrid Approach To Projects In Gaming Courses, Amber Settle, Joe Linhoff, André Berthiaume

We describe an approach to projects used in game development courses that supports learning individual skills while also developing team skills. Early assignments focus on developing individual skills in coding and content creation, and when those skills are honed, students form teams to work on a larger and more complex game. Classes that use a hybrid approach, that is individual projects that build toward a large group project, allow students to solidly learn game development skills required of gaming graduates and yet stimulate creativity and challenge students to move beyond their comfort zone.
