Exploring The Roles Of Inclusive Design In Fulfilling Corporate Social Responsibility: A Multi-Case Study Of Three Large-Size Mhealth Corporations, Haiou Zhu, Cees De Bont, Thorsten Gruber, Hua Dong

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Large-size corporations play important roles in addressing social problems such as health disparity. The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) demonstrates the roles of corporations in society and argues for sustainable business development. Inclusive Design as a responsible design approach could contribute to developing inclusive products and services and creating sustainable value for businesses. This paper explores the opportunities to integrate Inclusive Design into business, with a focus on fulling corporate social responsibility. The literature review on CSR and Inclusive Design identifies the common objective of creating sustainable value and generating social value simultaneously. Subsequently, a multi-case study of three …

Identifying Inclusive Design Goals For The Blind And Visually Impaired In Venice, Luca Casarotto, Pietro Costa, Erika Cunico, Maria Manfroni, Calogero Mattia Priola

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The aim of this paper is to understand how the use of inclusive design methodologies can contribute to the creation of projects for mobility and access to cultural information. Specifically, the research focuses on visual disabilities in a unique context such as the city of Venice. Starting from ethnographic research and a comparison of different case studies, the purpose of this paper is to identify some Design Goals useful to visually impaired users in the Venetian context. The Design Goals definition allowed us to investigate how the use of inclusive design methodologies for visually impaired users can contribute to the …

The State Of Inclusive And Human-Centred Design In Oral Healthcare, Isobel Leason, Farnaz Nickpour Jun 2022

The State Of Inclusive And Human-Centred Design In Oral Healthcare, Isobel Leason, Farnaz Nickpour

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There is an increasing body of work that explores the potential of inclusive and human-centred design to address challenges to our societies’ healthcare. However, there is limited evidence of the utilisation and understanding of these approaches specifically in oral healthcare. This paper reviews the state of inclusive and human-centred design in oral healthcare. A systematic mapping study is used to identify 50 projects relevant to inclusive and human-centred design in oral healthcare. The data extracted from each project helps to examine the nature of inclusive and human-centred design in oral healthcare, reflect on who is being designed for and with, …

Design As A Practice Of Care: Feminist Perspectives On Preventing Harm And Promoting Healing Through Design, Alison Place Jun 2022

Design As A Practice Of Care: Feminist Perspectives On Preventing Harm And Promoting Healing Through Design, Alison Place

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design as a discipline has traditionally positioned itself as an enterprise in service to capitalism, perpetuating the domination of wealth and the exploitation of la-bor and resources, but recent discourse in the field has increasingly raised ques-tions around design's social and environmental impact. These discourses typically address themes of inclusion, sustainability and ethics, but some have gone fur-ther to explore the potential for care to play a role in the design process. More than ever, an interrogation of the connection between design and care is need-ed, as issues such as climate change, social inequality, global pandemics and ag-ing populations require …

Empathy In The Design Of Assistive Devices For Older Adults: An Exploratory Study With Portuguese Women, Daniela Silva, Alison Burrows, Paula Trigueiros Jun 2022

Empathy In The Design Of Assistive Devices For Older Adults: An Exploratory Study With Portuguese Women, Daniela Silva, Alison Burrows, Paula Trigueiros

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Assistive Devices (AD) aim to enhance the autonomy of their users, among whom are older adults. However, older adults often have negative feelings towards these products, such as the fear of dependence, which in turn influence their acceptance and use. These feelings can result from the use of design approaches that focus merely on users’ physical abilities. This article argues for the importance of rethinking approaches to the design of AD by focusing on a holistic and empathic view of older people. It also seeks to contribute to a richer understanding of what independence and dependence means to older people. …

Improving Our Understanding Of User Trial Samples Using Survey Data, Anya Petyaeva, Joy Goodman-Deane, Mike Bradley, Sam Waller, John Clarkson Jun 2022

Improving Our Understanding Of User Trial Samples Using Survey Data, Anya Petyaeva, Joy Goodman-Deane, Mike Bradley, Sam Waller, John Clarkson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

User trials provide valuable information on how users respond to interfaces in practice. However, it can be hard to ensure a representative sample. We propose a methodology to improve the understanding of the sample’s skew and to identify the characteristics of those who are missing. This can improve the interpretation of results and inform further recruitment to improve the sample. The methodology involves comparing samples with survey data from the UK population on technology experience, competence and attitudes. We provide a case study of this methodology in practice. 30 participants were recruited using quota sampling with significant effort to obtain …

Is Inclusive Design Failing Inclusion? Identifying The Dilemmas At The Core Philosophy And Practices Of Inclusive Design, Luka Kille-Speckter, Farnaz Nickpour Jun 2022

Is Inclusive Design Failing Inclusion? Identifying The Dilemmas At The Core Philosophy And Practices Of Inclusive Design, Luka Kille-Speckter, Farnaz Nickpour

DRS Biennial Conference Series

‘Inclusion’ is aspirationally popular these days, full of complexities, contradictions and compromises. With the rise of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) to the top of societal ‘agenda’, a question worth asking is, are we becoming truly more inclusive, or simply moving towards a version of inclusion which is ‘realistic’, ‘achievable’ and ‘measurable’. What role does Inclusive Design play here and which narrative/s of inclusion is it contributing to? In this conversation, we interrogate the potential paradoxes and dilemmas of Inclusive Design from both a philosophical and a practical point of view. We then ask how these could be categorically captured …

Inclusive Design: Perspectives, Guidance, And Reflections, Hua Dong, Farnaz Nickpour, Chris Mcginley Jun 2022

Inclusive Design: Perspectives, Guidance, And Reflections, Hua Dong, Farnaz Nickpour, Chris Mcginley

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This is the introduction to the papers of the Inclusive Design Practice track, DRS2022. The 11 papers were selected from 22 initial submissions for the ‘Inclusive design practice’ and ‘design research for healthy ageing’ tracks. They covered a range of topics relating to inclusive design, so we combined them into one track to give the audience a broad overview. The papers were classified into three groups: perspectives, guidance, and reflections. They demonstrated scholars’ and practitioners’ interpretation of inclusive design in different contexts, knowledge about design principles and good practice, and critical reflection on history, methodology and practice.

How To Design Tangible Learning Experiences: A Literature Review About Science Exhibit Design, Tina Bobbe, Robert Fischer Jun 2022

How To Design Tangible Learning Experiences: A Literature Review About Science Exhibit Design, Tina Bobbe, Robert Fischer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Designing science exhibits that promote visitor engagement and learning remains a challenge. While theoretical models about visitor learning has been thor-oughly addressed in the academic literature, there is little empirical knowledge about actual exhibit design. This takes place in a landscape of rapidly developing interaction technologies, while the demand for inclusion and equity measures increases. This lit-erature review aims at bridging knowledge from across various disciplines to offer a recent and comprehensible overview, providing a new status quo for further research and practice in exhibit design. Beginning with a definition and introduction of central terms and theoretical constructs around informal …

Graphicacy: How Fluency In Reading And Making Visualizations Can Yield More Inclusive Reading Experiences, Joshua Korenblat Oct 2018

Graphicacy: How Fluency In Reading And Making Visualizations Can Yield More Inclusive Reading Experiences, Joshua Korenblat

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

Scholars and students practice literacy, numeracy, and graphicacy in school. In this educational triumvirate, graphicacy remains the less familiar term. Graphicacy is an ability, a fluency in making and reading visualizations and charts. How might scholars working in digital media practice graphic literacy in the shaping and sharing of their work? By working with more awareness of graphic literacy, scholars can also become more inclusive. In this illustrated essay, I will describe how my work in visualizing survey data provides insight into graphic literacy. Survey data is a primary data source. These observations have the potential for meaning yet need …

Learning From Co-Designing, Hua Dong, Shu Yuan Jun 2013

Learning From Co-Designing, Hua Dong, Shu Yuan

Learn X Design Conference Series

A designer-focused approach is often taken when observing co-design processes and the designers’ learning is reflected rather than the users. This study takes an all-inclusive angle in observing an inclusive design workshop which involved five professional designers, five users from a diverse backgrounds, and five design researchers. Questionnaires were distributed to the designer and user participants, before and immediately after the workshop, to gather data about their opinions on broader issues relating to inclusive design. The design researchers carried out observations during the workshop, gathering detailed notes and audio-visual data. Follow-up interviews were conducted to identify any issues relating to …
