As a Research and Instruction Librarian, one of the most frequent questions I'm asked is how to find past theses on a particular topic or theme. There is an active thesis culture at RISD that goes beyond writing and binding a text. An exhibition is held in the graduate gallery to celebrate a curated selection of theses at the beginning of the academic year. (See Book of Thesis Books) Theses can range in format from an artist book to a loose-leaf portfolio. Many emphasize the visual and are a bridge to the student’s studio work. Without having any formal training in the arts, Helen Dupré Moseley (1887-1984) made art for around fifty years of her life in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Utilizing different media and formal qualities, Moseley created fantastic works of art that forced viewers to use their imagination and make their own choices in interpretation.

Child soldiers have been slowly forgotten about by the public over the last century. There are only a few groups of people are trying to fight for these children. As a visual artist, I created a painting, my work entitled Invisible Children utilizes acrylic and wildfire blacklight paint to symbolize the underreported presence of children in global conflict, the hidden image represents the light we need to shine on these issues.

My current work investigates the limitations of paint and mark-making that carries the potential to be read as various aspects in various types of oil painting, such as the particular tenants of landscape painting that evoke surface or atmosphere. These material explorations look at how the various types of marks and texture indicate recognizable forms or space that can be attributed to various qualities of the textures of nature, such as the surface of water or the fog of a hazy morning. These recent paintings explore the presence of excitement, energy and adrenaline rush one can capture in a moment. Oil paints have a quality that can make a painting come to life. This lifelike quality is exactly what I strive to capture in a way that allows the viewers to put themselves inside the painting. The inspiration for these paintings came from my own experiences of adventure and risk-taking. The use of foreshortening and distortion helps give the figures a sense of energy and create movement throughout the composition. Up until the era of Modern Art, the artistic community excluded women and dismissed their work as inferior. One exception to this trend is the 17th-century Italian artist, Artemisia Gentileschi, whose work demonstrated her ability to use scenes depicting familiar stories as a way to express her personal struggles as a woman. Drawing upon historical interpretations of her art, popular stories at the time, and the artwork itself, this paper demonstrates the use of art as a tool to communicate social injustice.
