Alif: Building A Bridge: Arabic Calligraphy And Arabic Typography In Design, Saba Esho

Honors Theses

The project is centered around the exploration of Arabic typography and its multi-faceted uses. Arabic calligraphy is an old practice and tradition that has been studied and refined since it was founded. Comparatively, Arabic typography is a much more recent creative study that is still developing, thus there has not been much literature that covers it. Therefore, the main goal of the project is to highlight and integrate Arabic typography with Arabic calligraphy. By doing so, the project builds a bridge within Arabic graphic design, connecting the rich Arabic calligraphy to its newer counterpart, Arabic typography.

Accessibility, Aesthetics, And Community: Lessons For Designers From The Zine Archives, Lilith Jackson May 2021

Accessibility, Aesthetics, And Community: Lessons For Designers From The Zine Archives, Lilith Jackson

Honors Theses

This text is an exploration into the importance of inclusion of zines and zine culture in the education of designers and other creatives. It provides an argument that zines offer valuable lessons for contemporary designers through exploration of the accessibility and materials used in zine making, the aesthetics developed within the rise of zines, and the communities involved in making and reading zines. With an emphasis on three zines; Fantasy Commentator (1943), Sniffin’ Glue (1976–77), Riot Grrrl (1970s-1980s), the text discusses the short and long term benefits of zines, zine making, and zine culture.

An Exploration Into Constructed Space, Lauren Elise Williamson May 2021

An Exploration Into Constructed Space, Lauren Elise Williamson

Honors Theses

Our interactions with and experience within the built environment are mediated by design. Evident in the infrastructure and conventions of modern society, designed experiences perpetuate existing values and construct new values by directing attention and movement in space. One’s sensory awareness of space through mindfulness and perception is integral to uncovering the systems of control that design frequently renders invisible. Through a cross-examination of ma, dérive, stroll gardens, and maps, this paper positions tourism, specifically Rock City, as an example of constructed space. Experience tourism leverages physical layout and perceptual elements before, during, and after visiting the spectacle. Tourism sells …

Engagement And Computational Thinking Through Creative Coding, Dana Hoppe

Honors Theses

Rising enrollments in Computer Science pose an opportunity to engage students from diverse backgrounds and interests; and a challenge to deliver on positive learning outcomes. While student engagement is the driving factor for increased learning performance and retention, it has been declining to new lows for Computer Science students in recent years. In order to further explore the potential of contextualized computing as a tool for increasing engagement in computing and developing Computational Thinking aptitude in students, we have developed an introductory computing course contextualized with Art and Design with modules centered around guiding pedagogical principles and aimed at middle …

Barriers: An Exploration Of Architectural Structures As An Indication Of Wealth And Socioeconomic Status, Lisa Demoranville Jun 2019

Barriers: An Exploration Of Architectural Structures As An Indication Of Wealth And Socioeconomic Status, Lisa Demoranville

Honors Theses

I decided to explore the barriers and limitations of wealth through an investigation of architectural structures, focusing on popular industries and institutions on which our society commonly depends. I have noticed that places such as hospitals, schools, grocery stores, and restaurants differ dramatically depending on the neighborhoods in which they were located. This topic sparked my interest after living in Lima, Peru for a month, as I was able to observe the developing economy and dramatic division of wealth among the population. Certain questions about the divides and differences within a society and its culture started crossing my mind; not …

Freiden Skincare: Evolving Stigmas For The Sake Of Wellness, Gabrielle Graham May 2019

Freiden Skincare: Evolving Stigmas For The Sake Of Wellness, Gabrielle Graham

Honors Theses

Frieden (pronounced free-den) is the German word for peace and self-reconciliation. Frieden is a skincare line infused with Cannabidiol, a natural compound found in marijuana plants that can be used for treating pain without the hallucinogenic side-effects (thanks to no THC being present in the product). Health benefits of Cannabidiol extend to topical relief from chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and a multitude of other forms of reprieve from discomfort.

Through my research, I discovered that in a world of fast fixes and reactive remedies, visual communication has influenced consumers to be more thoughtful with their purchases. Thanks in part to …

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison Jun 2011

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison

Honors Theses

Every one wants to play a fun game, but ”fun” is a subjective quality. Flow, a psychological theory to define what ”fun” is, states that, for an activity to be considered fun, the chal-lenge it presents must correlate with that participant’s abilities such that the activity is neither too easy or too difficult. One of the biggest problems for game designers is balancing the difficulty of its content in such a way that it appeals to the largest audience possible. In order to broaden audiences, de-velopers need to invest effort into creating numerous, discrete balances that are aligned to varying …

Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser

Honors Theses

The current project sought to analyze the life and work of the designer Coco Chanel. Through investigation into her life course, values, contributions to art, theater, dance, fashion, and women’s rights, it is argued that Chanel embodied the time period in which she lived ; she both influenced, and was influenced by the cultural forces that predominated. Particular attention is paid to the time periods following World War I and World War II, two events that drastically changed artistic aesthetics, social norms, and life values. The post-war eras provided the fuel for the women’s liberation movement, ushering in the idea …

Design And The Woman, Sharon Kluck

Woman is a unique and almost mystic creature. Her role in society is limited only by her dreams and desires. One important aim in a woman's life is to appear her best at all times. Each piece of clothing can be a delightful reflection of her …
