Pinus Longaeva: Exploring The Intersections Of Art And Science Through Ancient Bristlecone Pine Trees, Delaney Burns

Honors College

This creative thesis develops a series of 30” by 20” woodblock prints that explore the intersections of art and science through ancient bristlecone pine trees. These trees can live for over 5,000 years, making them extremely important to dendrochronology, the study of dating and analyzing tree rings. The growth patterns of these tree rings are used to study climate change over long periods of time. This thesis focuses on these trees due to their importance to climate change and personal significance to the author. By studying the history of ecological art movements, these prints are placed in the category of …

Paper, Pulp, And Place: Investigating Connections Through Process Art, Olivia Bradstreet

Honors College

A small papermaking studio was assembled for making archival quality handmade papers and pulps appropriate for printmaking, book arts, and paper cast to demonstrate the connections between artist practice, materials, and medium through process art. Application of the wet sheets and pulps for papercast and dried 3-dimensional paper sheets demonstrated that the blender …

Self-pity and fear of facing the unknown are met with delving deep into the recesses of the mind in order to reconcile my waking life with my nightmares. This is a process of overcoming heartbreak and depression, and becoming self-actualized. In …

Art As A Tool To Communicate Science, Jillian Pelto

Honors College

My thesis explores effective ways to communicate science through art. My main goal is to illustrate significant environmental issues in a way that engages people emotionally, as well as intellectually. Researchers need a means of sharing fascinating things to broaden people’s horizons on science. In order to gain inspiration and ideas, I have researched and discussed a wide range of artists, past and present. This exploration has fueled the content of the body of artwork I have developed throughout this project.
