Millennial Rust, John Mcgowan

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Millennial Rust is a one-artist anthology comic, consisting of the first chapter of a serialized story, The Turkey Avenger, a series of autobiographical comic strips, and a collection of developmental material from the two projects.

The Turkey Avenger follows the exploits of the Turkey Avenger, a self-styled superhero with no discernable superpowers who hopes to “do good” in the best way he knows how: fighting crime. Unfortunely for him, the Turkey Avenger has no idea where to begin his quest for justice, stumbles into what appears to be a kidnapping, and is soon drawn into a conspiracy that’s clearly over …

Motivation And Learning: Toward An Intrinsic Approach, Wÿnanda Armas May 2014

Motivation And Learning: Toward An Intrinsic Approach, Wÿnanda Armas

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Having always been fascinated by students’ attitudes towards learning, for my Honors Capstone and for my Industrial and Interaction Design Thesis, I took the opportunity to research motivation in education. Everyone is born intrinsically motivated but this can be conditioned out of us by extrinsic motivation. Despite the known benefits of intrinsic motivation and perils of extras at motivation, extrinsic motivation is continually used, devaluing intrinsic motivation in all kinds of settings, including our schools. While intrinsic motivation cannot be taught, it can be fostered by removing the obstacles that prevent someone from motivating him or herself.

Reading is the …

Design Challenge How do you get 4-8 year olds to understand their food allergy well enough to communicate it to others? When parents learn their child has a food allergy, for them, it is a stressful, life-changing discovery. For the child, this knowledge has no meaning, yet. Here, there is the opportunity to break down connotations associated with allergies. Through design intervention, this book explores the possibilities of transforming food from problems into assets. For instance, Superman might be “allergic” to kryptonite, but he also has superpowers. Rather than label the child with allergies, why not rebrand allergies to turn …

Empowered Pursuit: A Reflective Essay On Using Creative Learning In The Syracuse City School District, Danielle Mae Lewis May 2014

Empowered Pursuit: A Reflective Essay On Using Creative Learning In The Syracuse City School District, Danielle Mae Lewis

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Within the Syracuse City School District, students have been struggling to thrive in an educational environment that focuses on standardization. In 2012, only 48% of high school seniors graduated with a high school diploma in the city of Syracuse. Numerous theories have been discussed as to why students have failed to succeed, with a large portion of these centered on the problems created by the No Child Left Behind Act.

This reflective essay constructs and deconstructs the research and conceptual work produced surrounding the topic of creative learning within the Syracuse City School District. Initial research, summarized in this paper, …

The conservation field has articulated the importance of publishing our research to disseminate information and further the aims of conservation. Article X of AIC’s Code of Ethics states that conservators should “contribute to the evolution and growth of the profession, a field of study that encompasses the liberal arts and the natural sciences” in part by “sharing of information and experience with colleagues, adding to the profession’s written body of knowledge.” Our Guidelines for Practice state “the conservation professional should recognize the importance of published information that has undergone formal peer review,” because, as Commentary 2.1 indicates, “publication in peer-reviewed …

The Design Of Compelling Narratives, Miasha K. Vicino May 2014

The Design Of Compelling Narratives, Miasha K. Vicino

Honors Capstone Projects - All

While storytelling is an essential form of communication and has been used to help humans make sense of the world and prepare for the future for thousands of years, compelling narratives are designed storytelling systems that encourage the audience to get involved and make active thought and behavioral change. Another significant aspect of compelling narrative design is that they are not resolute. While stories have definite endings, the end of a compelling narrative should be a “call to action”, an opportunity to engage further and invest time, effort, or aid back into the narrative’s cause. The challenge for designers is …

What Floor?, Claire Rose Pedulla May 2014

What Floor?, Claire Rose Pedulla

Honors Capstone Projects - All

What Floor? was the title of my capstone project, which was a temporary installation located in the Comstock Art Building (Comart) at Syracuse University. Comart, one of the university’s art facilities, is located a mile away from the main campus. What Floor? was built within the elevator of the building. For my installation, I transformed the elevator into a living room. I did this by installing carpet, constructing and painting wooden walls to fit within the space, installing those walls, and then furnishing and decorating the space until I felt it was complete. In its finished state, it looked like …

Article (in German) provides biographical details about the life of Ernst Collin, son and grandson of Prussian and German court bookbinders, who was one of the leading writers in the field of bookbinding and the history of the book in the period between the World Wars.

On April 1, 2014 two Stolpersteine (Stumbling Blocks) were laid to memorialize Ernst Collin and his wife Else (nee Cronheim) in front of the entrance to their home at Cicerostr 61 in Berlin. Stolpersteine are “monuments created by Gunter Demnig that commemorate victims of the Holocaust. They are small, cobblestone-sized memorials for an individual …
