Translational Placemaking: The Diasporic Archive, Alia Varawalla

Globalization and mass migration has propelled a hybrid existence, as individuals that occupy multiple geographies we live in a constant state of translation. Our museums and cultural institutions are in opposition to this; static, preserved and de-contextualized. At the intersection of printmaking and architecture, this thesis proposes a living archive to document the collective migratory journey across sites, materials, and hybrid identities. A network of centers for knowledge sharing and production centered on India and its diaspora. As art practices and people migrate, cultural production evolves with its context, gaining new meaning as it changes hands generationally and globally.

This essay presents the theoretical framework that informs my reflections on the hegemony of the slums’ poverty and human conditions, and whether art can disrupt the hegemony and also become a conduit to question our Being, hence Dasein, as per Martin Heidegger. The following pages investigate the work of Hema Upadhyay, in India, and specially, her inspiring protest work offering insights on India’s overpopulation in urban areas such as, Dharavi. The paper analyzes the cultural interaction in mixed marriage of Indian national who live in Jakarta with Indonesian in the more penetrating globalization process in Asia in the 21st century. The research aims to examine the binding of two cultures tied in the knot in the marriage institution, its problem and negotiation. The qualitative methods used here is conducted through questionnaire and direct interview and through the social media. In India, the color yellow has many symbolic associations. My presentation on the subject will be a visual journey through the historic and religious significance of yellow in Asian countries. This will include Royal Yellow used in the court garments in Malaysia and Spiritual Yellow as part of the Buddhist monks’ attire in Japan and Thailand. Indonesians, Indians, Bangladeshis, and Sri Lankans also know that this color is both auspicious and medicinal. Jill Heppenheimer and Joanna Smith have curated this exhibition of contemporary and traditional Lao tribal apparel, drawing upon centuries-old motifs.

Wendy Weiss and Anjali Karolia have curated a presentation of dazzling single and double ikat from India, including documentation of warp and weft ikat preparation.

Mr. Vaghelu G. Vitthalbhai of Somasar, Surrendranagar, Gujarat will demonstrate weft binding in October.
