Creating A 1940s Costume: A Historical Investigation, Jennifer Mott

The purpose of this Art History research investigation was to create a costume from the 1940s by immersing myself in a time period when people often made their own clothing. This was done to better understand what it means to have a personal connection to the items I wear. Our experiences as consumers in the twenty-first century are vastly different than those belonging to the people that lived during the mid-twentieth century because almost all of our clothing is purchased from corporations and created by people that we will likely never meet. The Designer was a student newspaper published in 1942. Three issues remain today. The first two issues are written by typewriter on loose sheaves of paper. The issue of March 1, 1942 included information about club activities, art exhibitions, and student council notes. There were some speakers and activities that were related to World War II and the home front. This was the first issue so there was a plea for student participation.

Scope was a student publication that discussed in its single issue the formation and plans of a new student organization. While the publication includes indications that it was intended to be published regularly, no other issues exist. This issue of February 21, 1941 had a brief article about the Trek Club at RISD and some of it's activities at the school farm in Barrington. A Winter Carnival took place and more activities were in the planning stages for the spring.

The issue of March 1940 mentioned the purchase of a farm in Foster, RI for RISD student fellowship. Other events for RISD students on campus were also included.
