Dear Designer,

How often do we find ourselves lost in the design process, unsure of the next steps? It’s tempting to view every aspect of design as a problem needing a solution. However, function is not a problem. For a long time, I approached design from a problem-solving perspective, treating material as a secondary consideration after the idea had already formed. This approach needed to change.

Particular Proceedings is the outcome of an ongoing quest to understand the origins and motivations of my creative process as a designer.

By continuously pairing early influences and experiences — such as architecture and woodworking — with recurring interests, I gather a view of my methods and, with that, a reframing of my affinity for designing: an intimate relation between material, maker, and content, with meaning often arising out of that process.

This paper explores the concept of drawing as a time-based practice, where the process is the core of the artwork rather than the finished product. I divide my artistic concerns into four chapters, each advancing on the previous one, to discuss my drawing practice, which allows for exploration of time and space across a wide array of media and styles of representation. The project speculates on the architectural possibilities and mysteries of miracle inhabitation. Luke 5: 35-43 describes a young child’s miraculous transition from death to life. The narrative encapsulates indiscriminating elements of the human condition. The descriptive Greek language, emotional conditions, and thematic elements of love and healing suggest architectural outcomes.

The architecture becomes a threshold to unlock the inaccessible. Not For All to Know, investigates components of the narrative’s emotion and language through representational devices and processes. Creating a successful picture book is neither an easy nor simple process. The illustrations must-harmonize with the text, move the reader smoothly through a story, and be, as Burningham puts it, "verdant." To achieve this, an author/illustrator must be prepared for constant revision. In my story The Fantastic Transformation of Frog the main character experiences some bizarre changes, but reverts to his normal state in the end. Through my process of creating a picture book, my story also went through numerous changes, but, unlike the main character's changes, these changes were not reversed. They led to other changes.
