Mentorship, Richard Bresnahan Jun 2003

Mentorship, Richard Bresnahan

Asian Studies Faculty Publications

Part of a special section on mentoring. Ceramist Richard Bresnahan discusses his role as a mentor. Since setting up his first studio at St John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1979, Bresnahan has trained 32 apprentices. To alleviate the poverty that is an extra burden for many apprentices, grants from the university, the studio, and regional foundations provide apprentices with housing, food, health care, and a small monthly stipend. As all the clays and glazes employed in the studio come from local sources and are processed on site, there is a ready supply of materials for both apprentices and visiting …

Effects Of Light And Heat Aging On Selected Quilting Products Containing Adhesives, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews Apr 2003

Effects Of Light And Heat Aging On Selected Quilting Products Containing Adhesives, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews

Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

No published results concerning the long-term performance of adhesive-containing commercial products are available to quilt makers. Consequently, they cannot make informed choices. The purpose of this study was to carry out accelerated light and heat aging on selected quilt basting sprays, fusible webs, and fusible battings to determine whether or not they contribute to discoloration or degradation over time. Selected products were exposed to 40 or 80 AATCC Fading Units of light exposure and 6 or 36 hours of heat aging. Following light exposure and heat aging, changes in color, strength and stiffness were measured. Results of this research show …

Characteristics Of Fading Of Wool Cloth Dyed With Selected Natural Dyestuffs On The Basis Of Solar Radiant Energy, Kunio Yoshizumi, Patricia Cox Crews Apr 2003

Characteristics Of Fading Of Wool Cloth Dyed With Selected Natural Dyestuffs On The Basis Of Solar Radiant Energy, Kunio Yoshizumi, Patricia Cox Crews

Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Photodegradation characteristics of selected natural dyestuffs were investigated on the basis of solar radiant energy. UVA and UVB fluorescent lamps were also applied to examine wavelength dependencies on the fading characteristics. The natural dyestuffs were observed to have poorer lightfastness in the comparison with AATCC Blue Wool L2. The order of fading susceptibility to solar radiation is as follows: Turmeric > Weld > Madder > L2. Moreover, it was concluded that the natural dyestuffs were strongly sensitive to visible light as well as to UV rays and L2 would be faded by visible light to a small extent. These results provide an important …

Graphic Design As Environmental Advocate: A Project On Graphic Design And Electronic Waste, Kelsi Giswold Apr 2003

Graphic Design As Environmental Advocate: A Project On Graphic Design And Electronic Waste, Kelsi Giswold

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Graphic Design is visual communication. It uses type, images, colors, and lines to create visual representations of ideas. Sometimes these ideas are small, like a logo and business card for a small company, other times these ideas are big, like MTV graphics or packaging for Pepsi. In either case, graphic design is producing and reproducing culture. The decisions of designers have the potential for great and varied influences.

"Sodoma, Sodoma, Thus Cried The Boys: A Reappraisal Of Gianantoni Bazzi's Life And Work, James Saslow

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

The farther back we go from modern into early modern history, the harder it gets to document those facets of an artist's personal life that might provide an anchor for claims to discern forms of homosexual authorial intention—without the probability of which, gay/lesbian studies might indeed collapse into the baldest claim of its detractors, that it is naught but meaningless psychospeculation.

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner Jan 2003

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

Talking about the content and meaning of abstract animation, for the practitioner or enthusiast, is like discussing why one eats chocolate or why we stand at the edge of the ocean, experiencing the sensation of the sand being sucked out from under our feet by the pull of the receding wave. Or why listening to a beautiful adagio can create such a stirring response. These experiences stand for themselves and need no explanation.

For the uninitiated, or the viewer who has little to no encounter with abstract animation, however, these moving images can be initially disconcerting and hard to understand. …

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson Jan 2003

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. If such a task were to be undertaken, a new storage …

The Springback: Account Book Binding, Peter D. Verheyen, Donia Conn Jan 2003

The Springback: Account Book Binding, Peter D. Verheyen, Donia Conn

Libraries' and Librarians' Publications

These instructions for making a springback account book are derived from my notes as an apprentice at the Kunstbuchbinderei Klein, with adaptations over time. While my training is in the German tradition, the steps outlined should not be radically different from the English tradition. Although the technique was originally patented in Great Britain in 1799 by John and Joseph Williams,) the authors have found very few descriptions of this method in contemporary English language texts. Alex J. Vaughan describes the technique with great detail in Section II, 'Stationery Binding' of Modern Bookbinding. There is also an historical mention in Bernard …

Town And Country: The Landscape In American Art, Sharon L. Gustafson Jan 2003

Town And Country: The Landscape In American Art, Sharon L. Gustafson

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The subject of Town and Country: Landscape in American Art seems an appropriate topic particularly in Nebraska where the land plays an integral part in defining our identity. The geography provides us physical sustenance as well as aesthetic nourishment. There is a closeness to the land that is perhaps even more evident in the plains then anywhere else on earth.

Landscape painting became a significant form of artistic expression in the 19th century. No longer merely the idealized backdrop for religious, classical or allegorical subjects, landscape itself became the topic of concentration. The British artist John Constable (1776-1837) and other …

Dalí'S Musical Roundabouts, Antoni Pizà Jan 2003

Dalí'S Musical Roundabouts, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Those familiar with Salvador Dalí's contradictory nature as well as his propensity to mask his own thoughts will not be surprised to learn that, publicly, he despised music, though obviously that was not the case at all. In fact, many witnesses say – Amanda Lear, for one – he was actually quite musical and, time and again, he could be caught off guard singing or humming Catalan folk songs, sardanas, zarzuelas, and cuplés – all folksy, kitschy, and, by most accounts, tacky popular songs. Dalí, however, went to a great length to conceal this spontaneous love for the simple, uncomplicated …

Image And Illustration In Jean Fouquet's "Grandes Chroniques De France", Erik Inglis Jan 2003

Image And Illustration In Jean Fouquet's "Grandes Chroniques De France", Erik Inglis

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This article studies the miniatures that Jean Fouquet painted for a mid-fifteenth-century copy of the Grandes Chroniques de France. I argue that the contextual interpretation of illuminated historical manuscripts must begin by determining how specific events were selected for illustration. In Fouquet's Grandes Chroniques, the choice of subjects is more closely related to the preexisting structure of the text than to the manuscript's immediate political context, indicating that his pictures were more important as images than as illustrations of specific events. Having distinguished image from illustration, I then discuss how his images contributed to the book's persuasive visual appeal, mining …
