Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem De Koonig, Jud Yalkut
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
While the words of figurative art and abstract expressionism may seem to be eons apart for the average viewer, it was the premise of "Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem de Kooning" to explore, in the worlds of curator David Leach, "a shared attitude regarding the essentials of image making." In the collision of realism and abstraction which highlighted a long period of East Coast painting characterized by these two major figures. Leach has seen a love of color and "a strong interest in shape" as well as "a love for the fast-moving gestural mark."

Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem De Koonig, The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Wright State University
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
The work of Fairfield Porter defies classification partially due to its directness and seeming simplicity, which ma ks an undercurrent of complexity and mystery-even ambiguity. The term "American Realist Painter," so often attached to Porter's name, only adds to this difficulty in that the context of Porter's development as an artist was a setting of varied styles and influence . Even among the artist of the past that Porter admired-Velazquez, Rubens, and Vuillard, to name a few-variation is prominent. Much ha been said about Porter's initial stance a a maturing artist in the I 940s and '50s as being au …

The Problem Of Artists As Professionals In Germany, Mcclelland
The Problem Of Artists As Professionals In Germany, Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
The social history of art, or more precisely, the social history of artists, has until fairly recently been an abused stepchild of both art history and "mainstream" history. Yet historians have at their disposal from the nineteenth century on increasingly rich material on both individual and collective artistic life. These sources have not been fully exploited.

From Statues To Sculpture: Selections From The Collection Of The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery And Sculpture Garden, Daphne A. Deeds
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
The title of this exhibition, From Statues to Sculpture, su~gests the evolution of three-dimensional art, from 19th-century statues that inspire moral fortitude, celebrate historic events and evoke spiritual enlightenment, to sculpture that questions those verities and poses new definitions of reality. From Statues to Sculpture comprises 20 works dating from 1860 to 1988. This selection from the permanent collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery represents a diversity of issues and developments in American sculptural history, from historic monuments to abstract figuration, from images of landscape to architectural forms.
Sculpture is one of the oldest visual art media. It …
Dislocated Emblems: Recent Work By Warren Rosser, Daphne A. Deeds
Dislocated Emblems: Recent Work By Warren Rosser, Daphne A. Deeds
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Though emerging artists often dazzle us with brash or daring work, the artist at mid-career has reached a level of consistency and retrospection that delivers the work from facile solutions. With a career that now spans more than twenty-five years, Warren Rosser's work has evolved into the kind of subtle dialogue between carefully honed technique and highly articulated personal vocabulary that is achieved only with the diligence and insight of maturity. "Dislocated Emblems" is a watershed of Rosser's long commitment to his art. These new works are the culmination of an intensely productive year when Rosser's aesthetic, philosophical, and emotional …
