Mark's Art And Bridge Construction, J. Mark Erlander
Mark's Art And Bridge Construction, J. Mark Erlander
All Master's Theses
Plactic is the material I chose to communicate my ideas. Named for its ability to be shaped, melted, bent, moulded, and extruded into an infinite number of forms, is one of two reasons I used it. The other is its concept is familiar to modern man and even a definition of him.
To make the communication bridge complete the stulptures are constructed to allow the viewer to take part in the final form. By moving the work, he is as involved in the concept, form, and material as I have been in making the piece.

Multi-Directional Ideas In The Duality Of A Living Work, Orlando Jimenez

The paper deals with the creator-viewer relationship, and the distinction that is commonly accepted as existing between the perception of the two, ascribing more value on the perception of one over that of the other. The conclusions were reached after acute observation of occurrences of everyday as a source of esthetic experience and after lengthy discussions with people involved in the creative process.
I Made Some Prints, Teresa O. Tempero
I Made Some Prints, Teresa O. Tempero
All Master's Theses
In discussing the prints and drawings chosen for this study, I wish to consider mostly subject matter and composition, giving less mention to technique. The three forms of printmaking used are intaglio, collagraph, and woodcut. A specific theme was not chosen for these prints. Since printmaking has been such a relatively new experience of expression for me, I chose to concentrate this study on the printmaking process.
A Use Of The Visual Metaphor: The Relationship Between The Figure To The Environment, Betty Anne Skalicky
A Use Of The Visual Metaphor: The Relationship Between The Figure To The Environment, Betty Anne Skalicky
All Master's Theses
In this study the human figure was used as a departure. I imposed my own style of drawing on the human form in order to achieve not only the illusion of a threedimensional quality, but to create a personal identification with the image on the part of the artist and the viewer.
A Series Of Paintings Investigating Certain Specified Space Concepts, Michael C. Jackson
A Series Of Paintings Investigating Certain Specified Space Concepts, Michael C. Jackson
All Master's Theses
This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. A play or conflict was set up between these two things; the success of the play determined the success of the painting. The factors used to judge success are basically those classical rules of composition dealing with balance: visual weight of areas, complexity, and color. The only areas manipulated were: (1) shape of …
Expansion Systems In Drawing, Anna Jane Licka
Expansion Systems In Drawing, Anna Jane Licka
All Master's Theses
Drawing as a creative mode of expression has maintained in some artistic circles a "puristic doctrine." "Puristic doctrine" in this case means the utilization of characteristic drawing implements and techniques (ie. pen, pencil, ink, charcoal, crosshatching, shading). In contrast to this "puristic doctrine" is what can be termed an "eclectic expression" in art. As applied to drawing in this thesis, an "eclectic expression" will go beyond the traditional techniques by the application of other media such as photo-stencil, stuffed fabric, and three-dimensional tableau considerations. The purpose of this creative thesis is to expand the two-dimensional quality of drawing into a …

As a result of this study, I expect that my perception and use of imagery, concepts and technique will continue to develop.
Bruegel: His Influences And Consequences, Regina Cheng Jafree
Bruegel: His Influences And Consequences, Regina Cheng Jafree
All Master's Theses
Pieter Bruegel the elder, whose work is as modern today as centuries ago, and whose reputation as a major genius in the realm of visual, spiritual and sociological reality is lately emerging in a fashion which seems to do greater justice at a scale eminently deserved. I feel that in times to come, men like Bruegel and Caravaggio will possibly emerge as the most significant philosophers of visual arts. The fact that Bruegel is now being increasingly appreciated on a wider scale testifies to his greatness as a prophet and as a man who looked into the future, deeply and …
Ceramic Feelings, Beverly Maki
Ceramic Feelings, Beverly Maki
All Master's Theses
Earth, air, water, and fire--four basic elements--have given me the opportunity to express my eclectic experiences into forms of clay. I have raised questions about my work pertaining to my conscious and subconscious to find how I see and feel about my work, in order to see myself in terms of my past, present and future. I have thought about the reality and nonreality of my feelings and wondered about the images and experiences that lie hidden in my subconscious, that could create new meanings and ideas. I have also wondered how I might relate certain ideas to my work. …

Sources For Neo-Satirical Drawings: Surrealist And Conceptual Processes, Douglas C. Brittain
All Master's Theses
This study was concerned with social conunent and the intensity of emotional expression. The work was not intended to be a sociological study with illustrations, nor as an over-literate approach to art, but rather as a study of fine art problems. The problems and questions raised were as follows: (1) How are contradictions resolved when strict definitions of fine art and caricature are combined in drawing? (2) How are surrealist and conceptual processes integrated with biomorphic and mechanical forms? (2) What are the possible symbols and techniques for expressing ideas and emotions about the "mechano-organic" theme? This study was intended …

Sculptural Furniture, Gary Galbraith
Sculptural Furniture, Gary Galbraith
All Master's Theses
The artist should employ his sense of playful experimentation that requires the re-investigation of old manners and styles. I have attempted to apply the imagination of my senses to the furniture object in order to satisfy other human needs aside from comfort. These artistic requirements remove the piece of furniture from the realm of neutrality and tastefulness and expect the viewer - user to experience visual communication.

Parody As The Ironic Mode Of Existential Art, Delma Ward Tayer
Parody As The Ironic Mode Of Existential Art, Delma Ward Tayer
All Master's Theses
This study was commenced as an investigation into the aesthetics of existentialism as applied to contemporary art in America, particularly painting. This student believes that to the artist who recognizes the absurdity of his existence, irony is the natural mode of expression. It is also the belief of this student that the form of irony in recent American art, expressed primarily in parody and black humor, indicates America’s own particular brand of cheerful nihilism. The purpose was to better understand the aesthetics of existentialism, to apply these to contemporary art, and finally to apply these influences to the student’s own …
Investigations In Mixed-Media Printmaking, Jarold H. Powell
Investigations In Mixed-Media Printmaking, Jarold H. Powell
All Master's Theses
The device man uses to transport himself is one of his dearest possessions and one of his biggest problems. The relationship between man and his machine is the basis for the content of this thesis. My own ideas and experiences are the source for the content of this series of works.
A Ritualized Approach To A Series Of Mixed Media Watercolor Paintings, Richard K. Miller
A Ritualized Approach To A Series Of Mixed Media Watercolor Paintings, Richard K. Miller
All Master's Theses

This iconography was secondary to the total work however. The thesis involved the development of a series of paintings with identical preparations and preliminary developmental stages, all of which, at a certain point in development, became totally dependent regarding further work on an intuitive development and a reliance upon epiphanic insights for completion.

The investigation entailed the development of form and space relationships in a series of paintings. The study included a critical evaluation regarding achievement of the expressive aims, and the conclusions drawn from individual paintings, as well as from the series. The fundamental locus lay within the figure-ground relationship and that has been the emphasis.
