Finding aid only for Folklife Archive Project 743. This collection contains information relating to the various artists involved with the Kentucky Folklife Program. Many of the artists included in this collection participated in programs offered at, but not limited to, the Kentucky Folklife Festival, Made to be Played Exhibit, apprenticeship programs, and survey or fieldwork that was conducted by the Kentucky Folklife Program. Artists included musicians (gospel, blues, bluegrass, banjo, thumbpicking guitarists, and singing) to traditional artists (painting, quilting, storytelling, basketmaking, and instrument making). Letters of artist Joseph Dudley Downing to Riley Handy, Kentucky Museum, WKU, regarding an exhibition of his work that opened at the museum on 28 March 1993. Downing discusses the content of the exhibition, associated printed matter and the return of unsold items, and provides background on the works “Isidore’s Door,” “Michael’s Door,” “The Window of Arthemise Fougerousse” and “The Chicken Bones.” Includes an unidentifed commentary on some of his paintings, and a list of 11 works to be exhibited.

Seeing the Sacred is a multidisciplinary arts project exploring the purposes of sacred art and its relationship with community identity. The project highlights three common purposes of sacred art: to represent a worldview, to express identities as members of a community, and to connect with something bigger than ourselves. This Capstone Experience/Thesis Project developed through an intersection of three primary interests: visual art, community engagement, and religious studies.
