The Reformation is perhaps the first great historical event where printing played an essential role. Indeed, as British historian Euan Cameron has pointed out, though printing did not cause the Reformation, it “was a catalyst, a precondition,” for it made possible swift, cheap, and widespread dissemination of information.
This exhibition introduces some important aspects of the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation by displaying a variety of printed materials. On a topic so wide ranging and complex, this can only be a sketch, but it will allow the viewer to perceive …

This exhibition is arranged primarily by theme and secondarily by structure. Added to the large representation of artists’ books are examples of other contemporary alternative voices such as Art Spiegelman’s comic, In the Shadow of No Towers, and Karen Switzer’s zine, Ker-bloom! These works form a group that is innovative, visual, and outside the mainstream publishing industry. Some works are collaborations. Several have musical and audio components. They all present a personal vision through exploration of processes, materials, and form, that we are invited to share.

This exhibition grew out of an art history class taught by Professor Alden Gordon entitled “The Sublime, the Picturesque and the Romantic,” which focused on 18th century art with special emphasis on the book arts and printing. Supported by a Mellon Foundation course development grant for information literacy, the class aimed at developing the students’ visual literacy as the ability to understand art images and objects in their broader cultural and intellectual context.
Students were asked to select an illustrated book from the Watkinson Library printed during the 18th or early 19th …

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Britain saw a proliferation of sumptuously illustrated books, incorporating fantasy in its many facets. The times were right, with the social and political climate favorable to fantastic and visionary literature and art. An expanding British empire was sparking fascination with the non-Western world, giving rise to illustrations of exotic, far-away lands. At the same time, increasing interest in revivalism (Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance), exotism, and spiritualism found a natural outlet in fantastic themes. Fantasy was a form of escapism from an increasingly industrialized lifestyle …
